Customer Reviews
Ben Liebrand's Labour Of Love
A few years ago someone offered Dutch DJ Ben Liebrand the opportunity to compile a collection of his favourite dance records. Putting together a collection of the tracks that inspired him and add in some which had something special about them. Liebrand decided to get the definitive masters in order to produce the best sound possible. Via his website he explains both the choice and, where necessary, what the version included contains.
Musically this is a mixed bag focusing heavily on the music of the disco era and some electronic classics. The sound quality is execptional and they are all presented in full length versions. Designed to appeal to more than the casual listener they are still an absolute bargain price as there's 4 discs worth of stuff here.
The choices range from the classic to the rather underground. Anyone who followed disco and what happend after closely will probably be familiar with the likes of a 12" versions of "I Feel Love", "Good Times", "Funky Town", "You Make Feel (Mighty Real)", "I.O.U", and "Shake Your Body" (by The Jacksons), but it's all in pristine sound quality.
There are also some lesser known gems such as Donna Summer producer Giorgio Moroder's "Chase", from the film "Midnight Express", which is a brilliant piece of electronica. As well as this there is "The Break" by Kat Mandu which sounds familiar whilst not being so. It's a track that builds and builds.
The first 3 discs rather neatly cover late 70's and early 80's soul, disco, electronic dance whereas disc 4 takes a different approach adding some later pieces and also some things such as Yazoo, New Order, and Frankie Goes To Hollywood which were danced to in clubs but weren't really the kind of acts you went to hear. The disc feels a little shoehorned on and some of the tracks certainly seem cooler to the ears of the domestic Dutch market this is aimed at than perhaps a discerning UK listener might give credit. Having said that a listen to Technotronic's "Pump Up The Jam" gives credence to the track being a possible guilty pleasure. Including "Finally" helps no end as you hear its disco roots across the earlier CDs. Both the Yazoo and Frankie tracks are mixes not readily available. The Yazoo cuts all the best bits from available mixes and still produces something very much of the time.
Overall a good choice of the classic and the obscure and a labour of love. If you like 12" versions, or just want to hear prisine full length versions of old favourites then this is a pretty good place to start. It's a labour of love and a very good value place to pick up some dancefloor gems.
