Hazelis joined by the P-Funk rhythm section as well as the singers of the Brides of Funkenstein on a mostly instrumental collection that contains some incendiary soloing, notably on covers of the Mamas & The Papas' "California Dreaming" and theBeatles' "I Want You (She's So Heavy)".

The Holy Grail!
If you like guitar rock, metal, funk or soul then this album deserves a place in your collection. Eddie Hazel was part of Funkadelic during the early 70s but receded to the background as the decade progressed. He resurfaced in 1977 with this gem of an album. His astounding technical ability is complemented by a very soulful tone. Good backup from George Clinton, Bootsy Collins et al.

The only reason I didn't rate it with 5 stars is because the album is pretty short. The quality is 5 stars however.

Pure Funk Genius
This album is possibly the best I've bought in years. I have been into Parliament & Funkadelic since I was 14 and have somehow managed to overlook this album and not get around to buying it. It was also deleted for a while, it's a very worthy and welcome re-issue.

The line up includes Bootsy Collins on "Space Bass" and I swear its Bootsy at his finest. I don't think I've ever heard him so good on any record, be it Funkadelic or The JB's. Bernie Warrel on `What About It' just sizzles. There are several covers on this album, ordinarily I'm a bit dubious about cover versions but Hazel's version of `California Dreaming' is sublime from start to finish, the cover of `I Want Her (she's so heavy) originally by The Beatles, is incredible and some how manages to evoke early Sabbath for me.

Hazel had a unique ability, to be very showy as a guitarist, but maintain a degree of subtlety that few can achieve. He unfairly to my mind gets compared with Hendrix too much, it's a bit like accusing all Metal Bands of sounding like Black Sabbath. Each has there own voice and although Hendrix pioneered a style of playing, Hazel took it too his own new level. His fuzz tinged wah fuelled guitar licks shimmer over the whole album. The backing is incredible, particularly Jerome Braily and Tiki Fulwood's drumming contributions, along with the backing vocals of Dawn Silva, particularly on `I Want Her'. Every one involved with this album seems to have pulled out all the stops for Hazel. The final track on the album before the reprise of `California Dreaming', `What About It' is without a doubt one of the finest slices of dance floor Funk I have ever heard and should be dropped at every house party!!!

What can I say, buy this album its truly wonderful. Eddie Hazel left us something very beautiful indeed, may he Rest In Peace & jam with Jimi.
