Customer Reviews
Starts off Great and Fades Away
This is from the Expansion label and the idea of the CD was to spotlight artists from New York.
The album starts off great with tracks from TL Cross and Family stand and by the end of the CD your reading the paper it just doesnt keep you attention it maybe another case of two many tracks on a cd and going for quantity rather than quality.
This is probably the reason why so many old tracks are found because in the old days you could only get around 8 tracks on Vinyl and about 40 miutes play time where now the artists are in the most making over an hour per CD.
Im afraid too many fillers for me, but some note worthy tracks.
Expansion - the hallmark of quality soul music
If you want to buy quality, modern, real soul music, you have to look for the hallmark that is Expansion. Ralph and Richard so know their stuff and this album proves that it's not just about obscure 70s soul that floats their boat. This is cutting edge, 2007 urban soul of legendary proportions. TL Cross kicks off in a smooth, pleading style, that shows the R&B crotch-grabbing generation of G-Soulsters how it should be done. All tracks are exceptionally good but of instant grab are Ra Ra's "Living Outside The Box" Morrison Slick's gorgeous beat-ballad over a sweet piano riff, Omar's contribution on another cover of Family Affair is hot and funky and don't get me started on the beauty that is "Heaven" and "Marvin" - quality soul lives in 2007. A nicely eclectic mix, but real soul through and through. If you value Rahsaan, Anthony David, Raphael Saadiq, Angie Stone et al, you'll LOVE this. Highly recommended and much love to Expansion for (pardon the Ali G ism) keepin' it real!
