Amazon.co.uk Review
If you didn't get to know Chrisette Michele by way of Jay-Z (she was the one singing sparkling hooks on "Lost Ones") or Nas (she channeled Billie Holiday on "Can't Forget About You"), stop wasting valuable seconds. Though the hype on this pure-voiced, raunch-resistant songstress has her resuscitating a classic jazz sound that rarely infiltrates R&B--comparisons to Lady Day, Nina Simone, and Ella Fitzgerald are mounting--she's more her generation's answer to Erykah Badu: any notes she wraps her lips around come out fresh-sounding, and she adds to the effect with a built-in elegance that's irresistible to R&B and non-R&B fans alike. Hip-hoppers get a custom dose of Michele's magic on "Be O.K.," featuring the flabbergastingly prolific yet still likable Will.i.am, jazz sentimentalists will instantly succumb to "Like a Dream", and anybody with ears on his or her head will warm to the slinky slow jam that is "If I Have My Way". Michele's is a rare talent; count on this outstanding debut propelling her to stratospheric heights. --Tammy La Gorce
CD Description
Def Jam unveiled a stunning new talent in 2007 with I AM, the debut album from Chrisette Michelle. Though raised on gospel, Michelle's biggest influences are clearly old-school jazz divas in the vein of Billie Holiday and Sarah Vaughan, astheir textured, bluesy phrasing can be heard informing her own delivery. Yet Michelle is decidedly contemporary, threading elements of contemporary R&B, hip-hop, pop, and adult-alternative into her unique brand of neo-soul. Help from artists like Babyface, John Legend, and will.i.am heighten the profile of an already mightily impressive debut.

OMGOODNESS!!! PURE GOLD, ALBUM OF THE YEAR!?!!?
WOW!! I seriously do not understand how such a gem of an artist and album completly missed the radar, Def Jam are idiots for this.
This album is one of they best albums I've heard both this year and Ever. Its such a breath of fresh air, just as I was giving up on RnB genre as a whole. She can sing; she writes; she keeps her clothes on; she's beautiful and my new favourite. She's up there with Lauryn Hill and Alicia Keys for me.
THE ALBUM; Production-9. Saleem Remi and others did a very good job. Nice jazzy feel that compliment her vocals to the tee.
Vocals-10. Awesome, she has such a unique and beautiful voice. She reall takes it back, Billie Holiday mixed with a touch of Aretha and a dash of Whitney. Awesome
Lyrics- 8. Not your typical songs, the lyrics are varied, no bah bah black sheep lyrics that you can easily predict
Overall- 9.85- EXTREMLY UNDERATED, GO BUY IT IF YOU APPRECIATE REAL MUSIC!!!!!
I HOPE SO MUCH SHE COME TO THE UK, that would be awesome to see her live; I'd pay alot of money lol.
Look out for her in the future-she WILL be BIG!
Despite some slightly critical comments about this album I personally agree it is one of the best of 2007. Chrisette's vocal when applied to jazzier/ballad tracks has a maturity that reminds me of Billie Holliday. The set of ballads is balanced with some commercial dancers but they are of sound musical quality. Why 'Let's Rock' was not the hit of summer 07 is beyond belief. It's infectious hook and 'urban' feel should make it accessable to the masses. it has suffered the same lack of radio air time that is the fate of much of the quality black music produced and ignored by daytime radio in the UK. A great shame. The title is 'I Am' and I think the music is a good showcase for this new talent.
If you like urban soul sung by a bright star of the future then buy this album, its realy very good!
Simply amazing
I must confess that I purchased this CD on a whim, and I am so glad that I did! I listened to the first track, "Like a Dream", which in my opinion is reminiscent of Erykah Badu. Chrisette Michele's voice is as powerful as it is beautiful and smooth. Each track sounds so fresh; her vocals resonate out of the speakers like a cool summer breeze. A quality which, sadly, some of today's R&B artists lack. My favourite tracks are "Like a Dream", "Be Ok", "Let's Rock", "Love is You" and "Is This the Way Love Feels". Do yourself a favour and purchase this CD, you will not be disappointed.
