Customer Reviews
Smooth and stylish
I've not bought any of Mr Standring's albums since Hip Sway, which I still quite like (a lot more than its predecessor Velvet which, to my ears, sounded horribly plastic). Then my ear just seemed to keep getting caught by the title track from this album and, after a few samplings, I thought yeah, why not? And very good it is too.
It's not particularly demanding, it must be said, but it's certainly very tasteful, accomplished (both the compositions and the playing and the production) and, above all else, enjoyable when you want an album with which to chill out without being sent to sleep. How might one best describe its flavour? Well, I guess it's sort of low to moderate key jazz/funk, made up of catchy tunes overlaid by Chris Standring's particular style of mostly electric guitar playing, set against a mildly ambient backdrop.
This may not quicken the pulse as much as some would like, but it certainly hits a certain spot quite nicely when you're in the mood. Not bad at all.
STUCK IN THE GROOVE
C.S.frustrates me. Many years ago now, listening to JazzFM as was, I first heard Good Medicine, and promptly bought Hipsway and shortly after that Velvet. Since then we have had Groovalicious, Soul Express and now Love and Paragraphs. As ever we get stylish guitar playing and great production. Problem - in truth we've heard it all before, I guess you could call it brilliant elevator music - which I think is a sad under achievement. Back in the day Chris promised so much more - but has stuck for nigh on 10 years with the same formula. Come on Chris - time to take some risks.
