Editorial Reviews
CD Description
This is a display of some of Erykah Badu's finest collaborations and rare material... Think Differently provide us with some very interesting pairings (Sa Ra, Georgia Anne Muldrow, D'Angelo and more) as well as an incredible cover of Diana Ross' 'Love Hangover' on this one of a kind collection.
Customer Reviews
Confused? Me too.
Thank you Robert for your review. Although that isn't how you spell Mama, yours seemed a very fair and even handed appraisal. However, I get the impression that you did buy some bootleg tape that must be doing the rounds.
According to a few Googles, the 2008 album isn't available until late February but, you've already bought and sold your copy.
It might be small evidence but even Amazon, who note that the disc is 'in stock' are unwilling/unable to list the album tracks. It suggests that, despite the cover art, that the album is not yet out.
My last piece of evidence is e-bay, of course, which is usually awash with music, expecially from the states. There is NOT A SINGLE MENTION OF THIS ALBUM ON E-BAY. Not a one.
And, in review, Ms Badu say that she hasn't even finalised the name of the album.
Erykah Badu might is all about quality. She might have lost her record label but, did she really lose her mind? I don't think so.
ITS A BOOTLEG!
****UPDATE ON ORIGINAL REVIEW****
Hello again!
Afro - I fear you're right! Approx 5 mins after I posted my review a friend of mine found all the same little clues as you! I've triple checked & you're right - the new album isn't out 'til Feb - so I'm no longer disappointed with Erykah, I'm now peed off with Amazon for selling BOOTLEGS! Are you listening, Amazon, YOU ARE SELLING BOOTLEGS!
Anyway, I've had a listen to the new track "Honey" (off the REAL new album) & it is delicious! Can't wait for it's release... and the other good news? She's still with Motown! : )
****ORIGINAL REVIEW****
OK - I'll start by saying that I am a huge Erykah Badu fan... I have the whole back catalogue so was really looking forward to this CD landing on my doorstep... Unfortunately, I don't think I have ever been so disappointed by an album.
Lets start at the beginning...
I opened the packaging and was taken aback by how cheap the production of album was - the artwork was pretty ropey; the inlay "card" was one piece of paper & the cd artwork itself was v minimalist... but in a bad way. Compared to the effort put into Worldwide Underground, this was comparable to an album sold after a gig by a Pub Singer. None the less, I put my first impressions behind me & put the CD in the drive...
At first, I thought there was a problem with my player - then it dawned on me, it wasn't my player, it was the quality of the recording. It was a recording of a live gig, but the sound was really dull & muffled - it was like it had been recorded on a dictaphone! Track 2 was exactly the same sound quality, but this was a mediocre cover of a Diana Ross song. I flicked through the next handful of tracks, only to realise they had all been taken directly off the previous 3 albums; no modifications, no remixes, no updates - just copied straight from the old albums. The only exceptions to this were a few REALLY bad tracks involving some sickeningly cheesy dialogue with her little girl (vomit-inducing stuff), and some pretty dodgy rapping. I swiftly popped the CD out of the drive to avoid any more torment. At this point I was both disappointed & annoyed.
I then looked at the back of the album cover to try & understand what had gone so wrong. It seems that her previous label (Motown Records) don't want to know any more - she is now signed to an unfortunate setup called Think Differently Music. This is the only differentiator I can put between the good & the bad.
Needless to say, I was so frustrated by this excuse for an album that I put it up for sale the next day, just to get it out of my house - Yes, it is THAT bad!
Anyway... some poor soul bought it & is now probably feeling the same anguish as I did... If it's you, I'm sorry, Karma will probably catch up with me soon.
My summary: Avoid this like the Plague
Here's hoping Erykah can get herself back on track & up to the standard of Mamma's Gun very soon!
my bad day at amazon
I have to add to all the previous comments about this album. If I could rate this album less than one star I would. I discovered its existance whilst browsing amazon and pre-ordered it straight away. Unfortunately for me, i also spotted the new d'angelo album (yoda) just after and purchases both them.
I was gutted with the d'angelo album. Another poor quality rehash of previouly released album tracks. Do not buy...! Thinking that I will be consoled by the new (ha!) Erykah album, it went from bad to extremely bad.
Today I've learnt an important lesson about buying albums on amazon.
