A good solid album of funk and soul5
Tell It Like It Is

From New York comes the tough sound of Stephanie Mckay with her second release Tell Like It Is.

Having worked with likes of Portishead, Soulive, DJ Spinna, Talib Kweli, Mos Def, Tricky, and Roy Hargrove, this album appears to draw on those past music contributions. The album starts off strongly with the title track that is self-explanatory lyrically and sound wise, continues with "Money" and "Jackson Avenue" with its hip-hop/funk sound.

The remaining tracks on this release are of a high quality. "This Letter" is a well-written song. "Oh Yeah" with it's anthem feel has a strong feel that would make most dance-floors rock. The solid sounds of "Say What You Feel", "Kinky" have that James Brown funk influenced sound stamped all over it.

For the track "Where Did Our Love Go" Stephanie duets with Anthony Hamilton, one of today's top soul singers, the result is nice laid-back tune. "Little More Time" and "Fiya" continue the good funk & hip-hop influence which is prevalent throughout this album. The last song "Oxygen" has a slow tempo yet with its heavy beat still delivers a funky & soulful sound.

Personally I feel it's been a solid year for female singer-songwriters in terms of albums released in 2008 and this one is no exception. This is a well-produced album. Highly recommended.

She's Back & She Means Business!5
I bought this album back when it was released and her first album which she released under the name McKay a few years back was simply amazing and just when you think an artist couldn't possibly top a fantastic album like that, she comes back and delivers this. A great album to have in your collection, definitely worth every penny.

It's nice that there are artists within music that are setting standards within the industry, just when you think music has lost a little of its edge with some of the talentless individuals who're gaining recognition for music with no thought behind it, this perfect slice of music comes along and them all out of the water. Now, if only artists like this could receive more recognition... then music would be amazing, especially as there is too much rubbish taking centre focus. It's nice to see an artist with real talent delivering an album that a lot of people are liking. More artists like this, please.
