CD Description
Expansion s Ralph Tee draws from a musically rich period of late 70s and early 80s soul to deliver a stunning 16 track collection. Ralph has been a prolific soul DJ since the 1970s, a former Assistant Editor of Blues & Soul and a radio DJ for both Solar Radio and Jazz FM (also back on the new Jazz FM launching October 6th 2008). Ralph also co-compiles the internationally acclaimed Soul Togetherness series, but on this solo collection digs deep to deliver a vibrant selection of soul dancers and mid tempos with a few ballads to complete the spectrum of soul flavours. Soul Ecstasy features legendary artists such as Patti Labelle, The Manhattans, The Isley Brothers, Tavares and The Main Ingredient (exclusive CD issue of the 7 version of Evening of Love ), most of the tracks here making their debut on CD have been re-mastered from the original tapes (over a nearly two year period to assemble this album). Also includes the soulful side of jazz fusion with artists like Hubert Laws & George Duke + two cuts by Ronnie McNeir, The Good Side Of Your Love released as a limited edition 7 single to coincide with this release.
Customer Reviews
A perfect Modern Soul compilation
The DJ Ralph Tee really knows his Modern Soul as demonstrated on this perfect compilation.
This isn't a set of big hits but instead picks a selection of his personal favourites for the Expansion label across the last thirty years. Lots of well known artists who had pop hits are here such as Patti Labelle, Champaign, Tavares and Isley Brothers but each is represented by a forgotten gem tucked away for too long.
The music flows from uptempo Philly style dancers, 80s synth soul, luxurious ballads and swirling orchestral soul. The defining aspect is the quality of selection which rivals the 'Dedicated To Soul' and 'Music From The Soul' sets from David Nathan and Richard Searling respectively for the same label.
Fans of the 1960s based Northern Soul scene will find less to enjoy here but then it's not aimed at that area. Some of these are big Modern Soul plays and Ronnie McNeir 'Good Side Of Your Love' has recently been reissued as a limited edition vinyl single.
It's always summer with the car roof down listening to this great set. It's engaging but never too upfront in sound. I really do recommend it as an essential compilation for all Modern Soul fans.
THOROUGHLY RECOMMENDED
An inspired collection of late 70's/early 80's feel good soul, that flows well and places on CD some fantastic tracks. Highlights for me are the Damaris version of "What About My Love" (Johnnie Taylor clasic)and The Main Ingredient's "Evening of Love". If you are looking to plug some gaps in your collection - buy this with confidence.
Best Soul Compilation of 2008
Great compilation by Ralph Tee . A lot of tracks first time on CD and it's up there with ' Deep down and discofied ' and ' Get this party started ' as one of the best comps of the last 5 years.
Let's hope we get a Soul Ectasy 2
