Inner zip with elasticated notches for ease, finishing with a seriously chunky rubber sole Dr. Martens is the stuff of legends. It all began in the town of Seeshaupt, Germany (near Munich) in 1945, when Dr. Klaus Maertens injured his foot in a skiing accident in the Bavarian Alps. To facilitate walking during the healing process, he designed a shoe with an air cushioned sole. By using old rubber tires, he constructed soles that had air trapped within closed compartments. He showed his prototype to an inventor friend and the rest as they say is history!

Great to look at, but looks aren't everything
I was ecstatic when the boots arrived, as I teenager I was a fan of DM's & was thrilled when a 'grown up' boot came along.
I was pleased that they seemed to be made of good leather & looked as if they would hold together nicely through several winters.
I opted for plain black to go with everything.
The crunch came when I tried to get my foot inside the boot. My foot slid in nicely, but when it reached the bridge, it was a real tight squeeze getting my foot inside.
Once in, the boot length was fine , it is a decent size five.
My feet aren't special, I have a pretty standard size five feet, which are quite compact with no lumps or bumps. And whilst my foot fitted the length of the boot, the width felt terrible. It would need some serious stretching to feel comfortable.
The shape & cut of the boot is forgiving (and once my squished foot was in) there is a decent amount of stretch around the calf. They did look great. It's just a shame they were too tight across the bridge.

Narrow fitting but look great!
I love these boots - and when I saw them in the sale just had to have them. However the first week of wear was agony! The width is really narrow, I have normal sized feet and have never known such narrow fittings. However - they do give (Eventually) and after a couple of weeks they are now fine. They have an elastic bit at the top so will fit most people, but if your feet are very slim and narrow these are the boots for you. If not try to put up with it .... they look fab.

I love them.... got two colours
I bought the bark ones last winter and loved them so much I bought them in red too. I wear them most days - for work, rest and play. I have massive, broad size 8 feet, and often "off the peg" 8s are too narrow, but these DMs fit really well, almost too big.
