Customer Reviews

Very Good HDD overall4
So far only using the external HDD as a backup drive, and so far so good, managed to copy under 200 GB in a few hours using USB 2.0, not tried the firewire nor the esata connections yet. It's also not too big nor too heavy (slightly bigger than a thick book that I'm reading at the moment) which is good.

My only gripes so far are the fact that I'll have to buy my own esata cable, which over here isn't in great supply yet, and the trial software bundled in with the HDD. Fortunately I have no actual need for the software as I can use the existing windows interfaces to do what I need. I would have liked to pay more if I could have got an esata cable bundled in with the HDD (the reason for the 4 stars) but now I'll have to try and find a place that has a specific cable in stock.

Excellent hard drive to have5
I bought this hard drive as i ran out of space on my previous Lacie 500GB HD. It was a difficult choice to make as there are so many WD drives out there however i went for this one due to value and the option for Firewire 400 connectivity. I'm very pleased with my choice as the speed is superior to USB especially if you have other usb devices plugged in.

It's silent in operation, especially in comparison to my Lacie. Very small and out of the way and the light at the front of the drive is not particularly bright which is great if you leave your computer on during the night.

Only thing i found is that if you have a mac and want it formatted for mac its a little more tricky. I done a quick google search to solve the problem which delayed my installation of the drive by about 1-2 minutes only.

Excellent drive and i highly recommend it.

Side Note for Mac Users:
To format for mac go to Utilites > Disk Utility. Select the WD drive then go to partition. On the drop down menu you want 1 partition and then select OSX Extended(Journaled) and then click apply.

First Impressions3
Very please with My Book as an external hard drive but not so please with supplied software. Paid significantly more for this product over the price of equivalent "Essential" EHD so as to get the automatic back-up software. Once downloaded this software did required back-up and as promised continued to keep tabs on what was happening so backing up as it went along. However system was so so slow. After matter of days had to remove and back-up by drag and drop. By slow I mean very very slow. So slow that it could not log on to internet. Once removed all back to normal broadband speeds. So my recommendation - If you want back-up buy the cheaper "Essential" product.
