Product Description

This is a very strong bestselling title - new in paperback. A ground-breaking book when first published in 2003, it is now a classic for all those involved in the textile world. It features exciting, innovative and modern machine embroidery from one of the most accomplished writers on the subject. "Raising the Surface with Machine Embroidery" (HB 07134 8851 4) is a book for everyone who is interested in texture in embroidery. Beautifully illustrated, it is structured in six chapters, covering: backgrounds, often using experimental or unusual materials; raising the surface a little to produce highly textured, low-relief embroideries; the next step - raising the surface even more; using applied motifs for high-relief textiles; frames, masks and high-relief panels; and three-dimensional constructions, bowls, vessels and towers. Lavishly illustrated with over 95 colour photographs, the book includes clear diagrams and detailed instructions, step-by-step where necessary. All you need is enthusiasm and a swing needle sewing machine to make the wonderful textures featured within these pages.

Great inspiration !5
Fantastic book for the textile artist. Covers great new techniques for creating spectacular creative embroideries. Each technique is clearly explained with step by step instructions. Ideas use many mixed media techniques, for example: ultra thick embossing enamel, thermo modelling material, straws, felt beads, glue gun relief motifs, puff paint, soluble fabrics and wire. Boasts wonderful full colour photography. Includes a comprehensive list of suppliers of all materials mentioned. This is the best creative embroidery book I have ever read.

Raising the surface4
Whilst this book has excellent coverage of the different techniques that can be used in embroidery; I was disapointed that there was little information on machine embroidery. The book is well illustrated, with clear sketches and lots of georgeous colour photographs. Maggie Grey is certainly a creative and imaginative textile artist, and many of the techniques and ideas can be adapted for readers own projects. An excellent choice for embroiderers on City and Guild courses.
