Amazon.co.uk Review
Ariel and her husband, Prince Eric, have a little problem with their daughter, Melody, in The Little Mermaid 2: Return to the Sea, the sequel to Disney's landmark The Little Mermaid. Melody is threatened by Morgana, the evil sister of the sea witch Ursula (both voiced by Pat Carroll). Before you can say "Briar Rose", Melody's parents decide to keep their daughter's roots a secret, forbidding her to learn about the ocean while Morgana is around. Now the budding teenager secretly frolics in the sea with Ariel's old friends, Sebastian and Scuttle. When she learns the truth from Morgana, Melody becomes an unknowing pawn in her scheme--and Mum has to take to the sea again to help.
As with Disney's other made-for-video sequels, The Little Mermaid 2 looks and sounds wonderful (and reunites much of the same vocal talent). Four to nine-year-olds who grew up with the original will certainly enjoy seeing the friends again. A new set of artists has come up with four catchy tunes and some fun new characters, including Tip and Dash, a pensive penguin and his blubbery walrus friend. Yet where Beauty and the Beast had a deliberate Christmas-themed sequel and Pocahontas told the tale of her historical trip to England, the plot here is somewhat forced. It is pretty much a rehash of the first film with different characters. Tip and Dash are a reincarnation of Timon and Pumbaa and Morgana is exactly like her sister, except thinner. Besides the stellar music, this unneeded sequel also misses another important aspect of the original--heart. --Doug Thomas, Amazon.com

It could have been something brilliant!
I recently bought the Little Mermaid (original version) on video from Amazon, and loved it even more than the first time I saw it (when I was about six!) But when I watched The Little Mermaid 2 to compare, I found it couldn't measure up at all. The animation isn't as beautiful, it's coloured so brightly it nearly does your eyes in. The two things I hated the most were the voice acting, and the changing completely of Prince Eric's character. Sebastian, Ariel, Flounder and Eric's voices have all changed, which totally alters their characters. I felt like throwing something at the TV whenever any of those characters opened their mouths, particular Sebastian. Eric is now just the sympathetic husband and father, and doesn't have half the personality that he had in the first film. In The Little Mermaid, every song was wonderful, even Ursula's solo, but in the sequel the songs are only so-so; alright, but not something you'll still remember when you have kids of your own.
After all, the film is still Disney, and it was a good idea; but poorly carried out. The undersea animation is almost as beautiful as the original, but still waaay too brightly coloured. If you are a die-hard "Little Mermaid" fan, then you might want to at least see it, but if not, avoid at all costs!
Made-for-video Disney
Although not as impressive as the first movie, the second offering is delightfully animated with the classic tradition of several catchy Disney songs thrown in for good measure. The plot is well written and some scenes even reminisce the first movie. Still very enjoyable :)
This film is totally wavey
After 10 years a sequel to one of Disney's best loved films is here The Little Mermaid II Return to the sea. It is story of Melody Ariel and Eric's beautiful daughter who wants to become a mermaid. But a threat from Ursula's evil sister Morgana forces Ariel and Eric to conceal Melody's mermaid heritage from her. But dispite her parents orders Melody longs to venture in the sea and becomae a mermaid she becomes a pawn in Morgana's plot against King Triton and revenge against Ariel. To do this she transforms Melody into a mermaid and tells her too retrive the Trident from Triton (not knowing that he is Melody's Grandfather)! In order to get her daughter back and to save Atlantica, Ariel Returns to sea to be runited with her childhood friends Sebastian, Flounder and Scuttle. This delightful film see the Return of a all star cast which made the Little Mermaid a spectacular film. Jodi Benson returns her role as Ariel with Samuel E Wright returns as Sebastian, Pat Carrol as Morgana and Buddy Hacket as Scuttle. It is a memorable movie with new songs and new characters that a turly not too be missed.
