The Blurayening Volume I: A Quartcent Of Highdef Discery
Batman [Blu-ray] [1989]Batman [Blu-ray] [1989]
Buy new: £8.98 / Used from: £6.40
Honestly, its not much of an improvement on the 2005 Special Edition from which its ported, though I suppose having all the features on one disc is appealing.
Batman Begins [Blu-ray] [2005]Batman Begins [Blu-ray] [2005]
Buy used from: £12.00
Well, I only upgraded from DVD to see the Dark Knight prologue included on this as an incentive. The main film hasn't been cleaned up by much.
The Dark Knight (2 Discs) [Blu-ray]The Dark Knight (2 Discs) [Blu-ray]
Buy new: £12.98 / Used from: £7.00
Now we're talking. The non-Imax scenes are gorgeous, but the non-non-Imax shots are the kind of stunning that makes your TV purchase wholly worthwhile. AND the film was such a gem, too.
Casino Royale [Blu-ray] [2006]Casino Royale [Blu-ray] [2006]
Buy new: £9.98 / Used from: £6.50
Another somewhat disappointing transfer. Perhaps the double-dipped disc is the one with the goods. This is just a kind of average awesome.
Dark City [Blu-ray] [1998]Dark City [Blu-ray] [1998]
Buy new: £7.98 / Used from: £7.97
Dark City is the best looking older film I've seen so far in HD (if eleven years is a valid use of 'older'). This presents both versions in HD, and has decent extras too.
Dawn of the Dead [Blu-ray] [1978]Dawn of the Dead [Blu-ray] [1978]
Buy new: £17.99
A brilliant set with an impressive transfer, I found myself most impressed by the shots of the sky. I've reviewed it in much more detail, have a look.
Eagle Eye [Blu-ray] [2008]Eagle Eye [Blu-ray] [2008]
Buy new: £11.88 / Used from: £7.15
Ah, a purchase from my less discerning days. Eagle Eye is a joyous, idiotic Shia LaBeouf popcorner, but not quite worth the extra fiver or so I paid.
The Fly [Blu-ray] [1986]The Fly [Blu-ray] [1986]
Buy new: £8.98 / Used from: £7.40
Seeing Geena Davis' maggot-baby in HD is alarming, but it's a testament to the SFX artists that it holds up so well. The 2-hours-plus documentary is another reason to buy.
Hellboy [Blu-ray] [2004]Hellboy [Blu-ray] [2004]
Buy new: £9.98 / Used from: £7.20
Trims some of the fat from the 3-disc DVD, but keeps the best extras, thankfully. Also, the film looks great, but not amazing.
Hellboy 2: The Golden Army [Blu-ray] [2008]Hellboy 2: The Golden Army [Blu-ray] [2008]
Buy new: £10.88 / Used from: £7.60
Arguably the best looking HD disc I've ever seen. Every colour is full and uncompressed, every set looks spectacular, the whole thing is just marvellous.
Iron Man [Blu-ray] [2008]Iron Man [Blu-ray] [2008]
Buy new: £17.88 / Used from: £11.90
At times astounding, at times underwhelming, it was a fiver so I can't complain. Great extras.
L.A. Confidential [Blu-ray] [1997]L.A. Confidential [Blu-ray] [1997]
Buy new: £9.88
Top performances all round, but another underwhelming transfer. Better than the DVD (by a considerable margin) but still a little lacking. Another set I bought for new extras, all excellent.
Monsters, Inc. [Blu-ray] [2001]Monsters, Inc. [Blu-ray] [2001]
Buy new: £10.98 / Used from: £9.99
Perfect. See my review for unabashed gushment.
No Country For Old Men [Blu-ray] [2007]No Country For Old Men [Blu-ray] [2007]
Buy new: £9.98 / Used from: £8.99
Ah, my first Blu. It looks fab, like looking out a window at a world lit by Roger Deakins. That made more sense in my head.
Ratatouille [Blu-ray] [2007]Ratatouille [Blu-ray] [2007]
Buy new: £10.98 / Used from: £8.28
It's a testament to Disney that their DVDs still look amazing, rather than going down the route of making the DVDs rubbish to sell the Blu Rays. In short, not much different.
Reservoir Dogs [Blu-ray] [1991]Reservoir Dogs [Blu-ray] [1991]
Buy used from: £9.79
Very surprisingly excellent transfer. Colour correction issues from the Artisan DVD SE are fixed, and all the extras are present, with a few new ones, all in an awesome package. Definitve Edition.
Shallow Grave [Blu-ray] [1994]Shallow Grave [Blu-ray] [1994]
Buy new: £10.98
Tables, dead Kieth Allen, mentallist-in-attic, they all look superb. Again, see review.
Terminator 2: Judgment Day: Skynet Edition Steel Tin [Blu-ray] [1991]Terminator 2: Judgment Day: Skynet Edition Steel Tin [Blu-ray] [1991]
Buy used from: £29.99
Mercifully has both versions of the film (technically three), and an OK set of PIP extras, also a great, cobbled-together commentary. Again, the best version available of a classic film.
The Thing [Blu-ray] [1982]The Thing [Blu-ray] [1982]
Buy new: £8.98 / Used from: £9.39
Awesome. Features the most tense scene I can remember in any movie, also, the HD image is some improvement upon the DVD, and the extras are ace.
Trainspotting: Ultimate Collector's Edition [Blu-ray] [1995]Trainspotting: Ultimate Collector's Edition [Blu-ray] [1995] by Ewan McGregor
Buy new: £9.98 / Used from: £6.49
Basically the already-brilliant SE DVD with a few new extras (decent ones, too) and in HD. For a lower-budget British film, cleans up remarkeably well.
Transformers [Blu-ray] [2007]Transformers [Blu-ray] [2007]
Buy new: £14.98 / Used from: £10.25
Very amazing to look at. Head and shoulders better and more credible than it's sense-numbing sequel.
The Transporter [Blu-ray] [2002]The Transporter [Blu-ray] [2002]
Buy new: £8.98 / Used from: £14.16
The only good Transporter film, but not just that, it's actually REALLY good. On my wish list for an age, I'm glad I finally forked out the £6 for it. Looks amazing, lovely warm image.
Unforgiven [Blu-ray] [1992]Unforgiven [Blu-ray] [1992]
Buy new: £7.98 / Used from: £7.49
Another classic I've only recently discovered, it looks stunning. I think I prefer this sort of thing on the format over big-budget blockbusters. The extras are great, too.
WALL-E [Blu-ray] [2008]WALL-E [Blu-ray] [2008]
Buy new: £10.98 / Used from: £8.00
Saved the best for last. Just amazing. Buy it even if you don't have a BD player, just in the event that you may eventually get one.
Rush - Snakes And Arrows [Blu-ray] [2007]Rush - Snakes And Arrows [Blu-ray] [2007] by Rush
Buy new: £11.98
Oh yeah, my one concert Blu. It's amazing, even for 1080p. I feel this particular show was the best choice for HD, given the adult direction style employed.
