Big but beautiful
Wow! What a brute. If you are looking for a compact A4 photo printer - look elsewhere. The range of Canons are massive. I had to rearrange most of my office to accommodate the MP600 within arms reach of my desk. However, this thing can do almost everything. It can print 4x6 inch photos in 38 seconds (Canon claims 28 but you can't complain about being 10 seconds slower). My old Epson RX425 took about 4 minutes for the same photo.
It can photocopy in a dozen different formats. The LCD screen means you can select wether you want it double sided, two sheets compressed onto one page, enlarged, upside down: virtually anything you can think of. The paper tray underneath is useful for putting in a big block of A4 (approximately 50 sheets) for general printing (you can select what type of paper is where so it knows where to feed it from). You can also use it for any size of paper up to A4: its your preference really. I prefer to have the plain A4 in the bottom and then put whatever size of photo paper I need in the top for sporadic photo printing.
It can also print onto suitable blank disks: both normal size and 8cm camcorder disks. These need to be designated 'Printable', so check before you buy your disks. You can also photocopy existing disks onto a new one. Just place it on the glass scanner plate, anywhere, and it can recognise where you have put it and copy to the new disk accordingly.
One problem that I do have with this printer is the paper that you can use. Canon's own brand paper must be slightly different to normal stuff (everything varies really) and the driver settings are ambiguous as to what you should select when using non-Canon brand paper. The results are therefore slightly dull when printing photos. When using standard own-brand plain paper, the black and white text results are absolutely amazing. It seriously is undistinguishable from laser text. This is the one area where the pigment ink shines. Literally. If you have a large area of black (on a chart or photo) it does take a while to dry, so be careful when handling. There is a 'ink drying time' setting that can be altered. Print times do take longer though but there is less chance of smudging from wet ink.
The ink is slightly more expensive individually than Epson. Epson prides itself on £6.99 individual inks. The basic Canon price is £9.99 for Black, Cyan, Magenta and Yellow. The pigment ink is usually £11.99 but works out better value as there is more ink in the tank (the cartridge is almost twice as big). The ink tanks light up with bright red LEDs when installed correctly. Be careful not to touch the microchip on the edge of the cartridge when installing, for some reason this is exposed as the plastic wrapper does not cover it. I have not tried any own-brand cartridges yet (although I would recommend this if you have an Epson printer: genuine ones kept getting blocked up - no such problems with ones from WHSmith [three times the amount of ink, half the price!] ).
Setting up the printer was relatively easy. Instructions for Mac OSX were straight forward. I don't what the procedures are like for PC, but the drivers and software etc are supposed to be much better. Mac users will find no problems what-so-ever. The bundled software contains a OCR (optical character recognition) program for scanning hard copy text documents straight into Microsoft Word. It also contains ArcSoft Photo Studio. This is basically a really crap version of Abode Photoshop. For those that have the luxury of Adobe's finest piece of engineering, you might like to do a manual install and skip the ArcSoft installation.
Another printer you may wish to consider is the Epson RX560. It also has the CD printing, extra paper feeder and has cheaper ink cartridges. However, printing resolution is much less (only 5760x1440dpi compared with the Canon's 9600x2400). Most Epson printers have the same resolution and most Canon printers have the same resolution. The HP C5180 has only 4800x1200dpi likewise the Lexmark P4350). The usual difference is the scanner resolution, the Canon kicks arse with a whopping 2400x4800dpi. The RX560 has only half this (1200x2400dpi) although HP and Lexmark seem to have the same. One thing the Canon MP600 does lack is a negative and slide scanner, which could be useful if you need to transfer all your old film negatives into the digital age. For this reason you might consider the Epson RX640 or the Canon MP810. Both will cost you around £200. I got my MP600 for £111 from Amazon, but you can pay only £20 more to walk out of a shop with it that day.
So, in conclusion, the MP600 delivers everything I expected it to and more. The range of options, print resolution and technology available in this thing is phenomenal. However, be wary of the cost. You can achieve amazing results, but it does cost money. The genuine Canon paper will set you back some if you want good quality prints, and the Canon ink will be more expensive than what's on your local supermarket shelf. The Canon MP600 is definitely aimed at the quality end of the market.
Initial disappointment then success
The first unit we recieved was faulty on arrival (the print head motor didn't work), but we are very pleased with the replacement unit. Excellent print quality from the MP600 and result is much less pixelated on pictures than the Canon ip4000, must be the 1 pl ink jets. Particularly good scanning and copying and is notably fast. Very good value and would recommend spending the extra money on the MP600, as it is more sturdily built than the MP510 or equivalent HP models. Unfortunately this model seems to be in short supply at the present moment, so you will need to confirm it is in stock before ordering.
Canon Pixma MP600 Review
I bought the canon pixma mp600 from pixmania.com for £107, which was cheapest i had found and was the only place that had it in stock! I received the item in 48hrs. The item was well packaged, included in the box was the printer, the cd tray, electricity cable (no usb cable), 5 ink cartridges, installation cds and manual. The MP600 was easy to set up with or without the instructions manual as the instructues appear on the brightly lit, easy to use LCD screen. Takes about 20 minutes to set up in total as it adjusts the print heads, prepares the ink and prints a sample page. During this time u have time to install the software to ur pc. It comes with 2 CDs, 1 for windows and 1 for macintosh. I have windows and so i can say installation was easy and straightforward.
The printer is fab! the scroll wheel is fantastic and easy to use,if your not so good with wheels theres buttons north, south, east and west of the wheel as an additional method of passing throught the options of what you want to do. If this is still to complicated for you there is a navigation button, simply click that and you can click the down button to go through a list of options. You can scan/photocopy/print in black or colour. You can print onto printable cds. Good quality photo printing and normal printing. its very fast, much faster than any of the disasterous epson printers ive had (which guzzled up my ink too). You can increase and reduce the size when copying, you can copy to sheets on 1 sheet or ultiple photos can be scanned onto one A4 sheet. ou can photocopy double sided. You can even create an album from a memory card. there are also several dfferent types of memory card slots so you can print directly from them.
I have to say however the printer is a lot larger than expected, but it does absolutely everything you need. You can print pictures, notes or documents directly from your mobile phone using the infrared port. I found this a bit useless seeing as most mobile phones sold over the last year are most likely to have bluetooth only. However, there is a slot to plug in a cable that connects to your camera so you can print directly of your camera, or you can also insert a bluetooth dongle which thus enables users like myself to print directly from my mobile.
Ink cartridges and printer head was easy to slot it, the cartridges light up bright red to show you have installed it correctly!
In conclusion i give this printer 4/5 stars simply because its somewhat large, doesnt include a bluetooth dongle and usb cable, and finally because it doesnt have an automatic document feeder. Otherwise its fantastic and i would definately recommend it. Ive had no problems with the software or the hard ware. Before i order the printer i called canons customer service to ask what printer was best for my needs and they were very polite and helpful. Thumbs up for canon.
