Product Description

The ice caps are melting.
Rainforests burning.
Millions starving...

The world is dying. Right now.

When a mysterious stranger appears to be healing New York City's sick merely through touch, a media frenzy catapults him to superstar status.

When he then claims he can heal the entire world of hunger, injustice, and suffering as easily as he seems able to heal a sick child, thousands rally to his cause, desperate for a saviour to snatch the world from the edge of darkness.

But not everyone is eager to see the world changed.

Driven by insatiable greed for money and power, corporate America, organized crime, even the mighty White House will stop at nothing to ensure the world stays just the way it is: under their control - poverty, disease, wars and all.

A disillusioned journalist, Mary battles her scepticism to finally believe in the stranger's gift. Seeing him as mankind's last hope for creating a utopia, she befriends him to try to realize the world she's always dreamed of.

But will the world embrace a visionary with such a gift? Or will fear, greed, or a holy war see it rip itself apart?

Mary quickly discovers that changing the world is not only difficult but downright deadly.

Hurled into a raging storm of bullets, doubles crosses, car chases, and conspiracies, Mary helps this enigmatic stranger fight for his vision to become a reality. But what vision is that?

Can he truly heal?
Does he really want to end suffering?
Or, with immeasurable wealth the prize, is this the greatest confidence trick in history, masterminded to swindle billions from a world desperate for a saviour to save it?
On a roller coaster adventure overflowing with mystery, shocking revelations, and pulse-pounding danger, Mary realizes there's nowhere to hide from the fate that awaits them and which will shake the entire globe.

Dare you read 'What if...?'? - It'll tear your world apart!

Editorial Reviews

Review
Deftly and intriguingly written. [A] thriller that fans of novels such as 'The Da Vinci Code' will relish. Highly recommended to thriller fans everywhere. --John Taylor, Midwest Book Review

'What if...?' is virtually flawless - precise, poetic, and skillfully crafted. It's great writing with a great story, very well told. I really don't think the publisher knows what kind of potential success it is they have on their hands. --Nicholas Grabowsky, Bestselling Novelist

An engaging and exciting thriller with a difference. It would hold its own with many of the books in the bestseller lists - and then some. --Scott Pack, Book Reviewer, Me and My Big Mouth

Definitely makes you think4
I was looking forward to reading this book - until it appeared in the post... The cover of the book is really bad - possibly the worst I've ever seen - just something about text with a drop shadow and the religious painting filled me with dread! My plea to Steve is this - if there were ever a book that the saying never judge a book by its cover was meant for it is this one. If you want people to pick this book off the shelf in the store then get a new cover artist for the paperback!

Luckily my initial thoughts changed as soon as I started reading.

At the beginning of the novel we are introduced to Mary; a New York journalist who experiences a horrific car accident and to the surprise of witnesses and doctors alike lives to tell the tale. Before too long she hooks up with John Connolly, a vagrant who has a powerful gift, and plans to make the world a better place.

This isn't another DaVinci Code - the characters are not on a search for the Holy Grail - instead Steve builds a fast-paced story around one man's dream to create Utopia, a world where there is no poverty or disease, where people prosper and live in peace. While many people believe that this could become a reality and rally their support their are others who believe Connolly is some kind of Anti-Christ, sent to destroy America if not the World with his actions.

This book has all of the hallmarks of an action-packed novel; conspiracies, shootouts, double-crosses and car chases - throw in religious unrest and a presidential election and you'll find yourself caught up in an exciting tale that also forces you to think about the way we live our lives and whether we are killing the planet with our actions.

Wow! Excellent read!!!5
I don't go for books much - way too slow for me. I like action, thick and fast. Luckily my buddy put me onto this one. He swore I'd love it. He wasn't wrong!

Hey, you gotta read this. This is just so cool. The characters, the story, the philosophy - it's gonna blow you away. Honest. This guy can really write. It's as near to watching a movie as I've ever found in a book cos the guy really knows how to hook you and drag you into his world. You just can't put this book down cos the waiting to see what's gonna happen next just kills you.

This is one hell of a thriller so if that's your thing, you'd be a fool to pass up reading this one.

Fantastic!5
This is a fantastic book. But then so are many others. So what sets this head and shoulders above the thousands of other thrillers out there? It's just such a well-written and intelligent story involving such fascinating characters.

From page 1 you're drawn into an intriguing world and surrounded by a wealth of characters that are each drawn with such depth you can't help but care about them - you even get to understand and even like the bad guys! In fact you're drawn in so much that though you see the story unfolding from many people's perspectives you never feel lost, you always know just what's going on. In fact, the number of different points of view adds to the enjoyment because the characters are so rich and diverse.

Yes the book has something to say. But bearing in mind the premise and story events that's hardly surprising. In deed, if it didn't say anything there'd be a huge hole and the story simply wouldn't ring true. The clever thing is that Lee writes about human rights or the environment in a way that you don't really see that's what he's doing. It's almost subliminal. He uses short intense bursts of startling imagery to get the points across, points that are central to the story, so you are just swept along on the ride. It's only really later that these issues resonate and you're left thinking about what you've just read. And that's a plus in my book for any story. But then I like books that linger after you've finished them, that make you think, it makes them far more enjoyable than the instantly forgettable rubbish that masquerades as entertainment most of the time.

The best part is you can honestly believe in this story. If the hero really did appear in Manhattan today and the story events started unfolding in real life you can honestly see world events playing out just as they do in the book. That makes is an utterly absorbing and thrilling read. And damn scary, too!

If you like suspense, thrills, great characters and a story that grips from start to finish you'll love this book.
