Though the global atomic war of 2077 left the US all but destroyed, the residents of Vault 101 enjoy a life free from the constant stress of the outside world. Giant Insects, Raiders, Slavers, and yes, even Super Mutants are all no match for superior Vault-Tec engineering. Yet one fateful morning, you awake to find that your father has defied the Overseer and left the comfort and security afforded by Vault 101 for reasons unknown. Leaving the only home you've ever known, you emerge from the Vault into the harsh Wasteland sun to search for your father, and the truth.

Second DVD Issue Fix5
For those of you having an issue with the second DVD (i.e., it won't run at all) there's a fix going around on the Bethesda forums. It seems to be a problem for Vista users only. The fix is pretty simple; disable Autoplay by going to the Control Panel and deselecting Autoplay everything (you can turn this on again later). Next, disable the UAC (also in the Control Panel under User Accounts; this will need a restart). Finally, put the DVD in again, right click it and select Explore then right click the Setup file and select "Run as Administrator". Give it a few minutes (it can take as long as 10 minutes in some cases) and the installer will run.

After this, re-enable Autoplay and put the first DVD in. When the autoplay screen comes up don't select Play Game. Instead go to the Download option (or Downloadable Content option, I can't remember now but it's one of those) and make sure all the DLC is selected otherwise you'll just be playing vanilla Fallout 3.

I had all these problems with the game and was ready to send it back thinking the second disc was faulty. So I hope I've saved you all some time by writing this out here.

SO BOOOOOOORING2
(Single player experience) 14/11/2009 the game still crashes regularly windowed and with all latest nvidia drivers and patch and ffdshow codecs excluded.
FALLOUT3 brings practically nothing new to the FPS\TPS arena. The novelty of the nuclear winter landscape will quickly wear off when you realize just how damned repetitive it all is. If you've played the spate of shooters over the past 5 years (FARCRY3 BIOSHOCK, RIDDICK, TIMESHIFT, HALF LIFE etc.etc.etc.) you will find NOTHING new here! Just the odd gimmick like V.A.T.S. When I played FAR CRY 2 it was just the same: aimlessly wandering round the stunning but repetitive landscape looking for pointless missions with no closure. (at least the landscape was more varied.) My God, why can't the creators think of something a bit more original than `mutants' and armour clad 'robomonsters' for the enemy...it's so fu***ng clichéd and tedious! (Although the enemy AI is quite good) And them nuisance fire ants! Are these little clockwork twiglets supposed to be scary or challenging? The PIP interface is way too convoluted and distractive, too many choices. At the moment I'm looking for my fathers `holotapes' somewhere and I'm having to talk to all the wooden AI looking for clues with no joy and it's getting really frustrating and I also hate all the bloody scrolling and clicking just to GET OUT OF A CONVERSATION, why can't you just press escape or something to kill a useless conversation??? If FALLOUT3 didn't crash so much I might be less annoyed and cynical but...
Why am I still playing this game? Will it get better? Will it become interesting? Do I care?
Someone else criticised a reviewer for his boredom with the "aimless wandering" he said that that was the point of the game...my God some people are easily pleased.

UPDATE:
I'm just on the brink of uninstalling the game and binning it.

Epic5
Great RPG from Bethesda, i don't like download content, so i am very happy with this goty-version of Fallout.
