Does the job
I purchased this kit to clean the sensor on my D40X. Whilst it is a lot of money, it is cheaper than getting a shop to do it for you. Before doing this it is worth reading a lot of how-to articles and watching some videos on YouTube.
If you get it wrong you can damage your sensor. I purchased this kit in conjunction with a Giotto Rocket blower which is excellent (this removed most of the dust on the sensor- I had a lot). The kit comes with E2 which is essential for cleaning sensors with Tin Oxide (such as the D40X).
I managed to see the differences in the the dust by taking a photo of a moving piece of white paper at F/22.
Finally make sure you get the right size sensor swabs for your camera!
Expensive, but does the job
I was (as you'd expect) really annoyed to see dust on the sensor of my 40D. Especially since I hadn't had it that long and only changed the lenses occasionally. Since I take a lot of landscape shots the dust was very apparent against the sky.
The instructions provided are basic but, ultimately, this isn't something complicated. All you need is a clean working space and a (reasonably) steady hand. In the end, it took all but one of the swabs to remove all the visible dust. Sometimes it just moved it around but, at one point, a filament (presumably from the interior of the camera body) was left on the sensor. Almost invisible to the naked eye but it left a huge track on the image. However, the next swab eliminated that and all was well again.
The blower and lens cloths are nothing truly special (most SLR users should have them already) but since the swabs and fluid can be bought on their own it's just a personal choice if you want to get this pack, or not.
Good Starter Kit
Bought this kit after a lot of research on cleaning DSLR sensors to clean a Canon 300D and 400D that both had a noticeable dust mark in sky or sea shots. I didn't have a blower or Pec Pads so went for this kit with six type 2 sensor swabs and Eclipse fluid which seem to be the recommended DIY method.
Instructions are brief but clear and two swabs cleaned up the 400D. The 300D dust spec was more stubborn and I finished off the remaining four swabs without entirely shifting it. I invested in a new set of 12 type 2 sensor swabs (not cheap) and managed to clear the offender with the first swab, so at least I'm equipped for future sensor dust.
Shots of brightly lit white paper at f22 are very effective at showing up your sensor dust specs, but if they aren't showing up in your shots at normal apertures it's probably best to leave them alone.
