Optical Image Stabilizer
Any slight shake while hand-holding a camera can cause blurred photos. Canon's optical Image Stabilizer (IS) technology ensures crisp, clear images by detecting and correcting this camera shake. The camera is able to microscopically adjust its own lens with absolute accuracy up to 4,000 times every second, so the image you see is the image you capture. Image Stabilizer is especially useful at full zoom, which exaggerates camera movements, and in low-light settings that call for slower shutter speeds.

Smart Auto Mode
Smart Auto has the intelligence to recognise 18 different scenes, from Portrait and Landscape right through to Macro (Close-Up). With AUTO Mode engaged, you no longer have to worry about selecting options from the camera menu. You are safe in the knowledge that your camera will use the most appropriate settings to optimise your image. For extra simplicity, the Easy mode function reduces the amount of information shown and all buttons except the shutter and flash are disabled. Motion Detection
With the inclusion of DIGIC 4, Canon's Motion Detection Technology now has more accurate judgement of subject speed. The 4 key detections are still made: Changes in brightness detected by the AE function; Changes between frames - pixel shift; Face Detection movements; Camera shake detected by the IS system.

When the camera detects a face, Motion Detection Technology will now adaptively vary the shutter speed according to the speed of the face movement. The amount of camera shake is also taken into consideration and the aperture is set to obtain the optimum exposure for that perfect shutter speed. When the widest possible aperture does not provide a good exposure the ISO speed is increased.

Face Detection and Self timer
Utilising the power of DIGIC 4, Canon's Face Detection Technology ensures superb people shots by automatically detecting subjects in the frame and setting the correct focus, flash level and exposure. With face detection self timer, the camera records the number of people detected when the self-timer is started. If photographer enters the frame (i.e. the number of people increases), the camera detects this and adjusts the focus and exposure. So you can take your time to get into the picture as the camera will wait until you are detected.

Red Eye Correction
The popular feature can now remove red-eye automatically during shooting, as well as in playback mode.

A little beauty!
I really like this camera! I have taken about 25 shots with it so far, mostly in the local park. The images are all sharp, which shows that the optical image stabilization works, because some of those shots were zoomed in. There is slight barrel distortion at wide angle but it disappears at standard and telephoto. Colour is realistic.

The LCD monitor is bright and was perfectly visible outside on a sunny day in March. And that's just at 60% brightness. If you put it up to 100% I would expect it to be visible on a sunny day in high summer. The optical viewfinder is usable but does not show the entire scene.

Canon have put a lot of features into this small package. There is an Auto mode which will set all the features for you, depending on the scene. Alternatively you can select Program AE mode, which allows you to have full control of the features. There is also a Movie mode.

One nice feature of this camera (and there are many) is that you can set the LCD monitor to have dark bands across the top and bottom, so that the central area is in the proportions 3:2. I will probably use that a lot, because I generally print 6" x 4".

What a little stunner!! I am thrilled with this gorgeous camera, and still coming to grips with some of the finer points of the manual modes, but to be honest, I've got some really great shots using the Auto mode!!! The zoom is excellent, almost no quality loss on a real close-up, and the macro is very good, true and faithful. I love the idea of the viewfinder, though the lcd screen is so bright, I haven't had much cause to rely on it, whatever the conditions. Considerable battery savings by switching off the monitor. The only problem I've had is finding a suitable case...one with pockets for additional battery and memory card. I use an 8gb card, and the battery life is fantastic, so just a small niggle.

Lovely little camera!!!!
I purchased this as a replacement for my Pentax Optio M40,which was fine apart from the LCD screen being useless in bright or sunny conditions,so I wanted a camera with an optical viewfinder. This Canon is a little gem,the LCD screen is much better than the Pentax,with the viewfinder as a backup in really bright conditions.It is very versatile and easy to use, shots taken in auto mode are really good whatever the conditions, and you have Program mode if you want to have more control. Well done, Canon!!!!
