Customer Reviews
Sensational
Richard Barbieri has mostly worked within the confines of Japan, either with Steve Jansen, Sylvian, Karn, barring a few off side projects, and perhaps is a bit forgotten as the "4th Member", but this has all been blown away recently. Firstly the Magnificiant Indigo Falls album, and now Thing Buried.
I was amazed by how good this album really is, probably the best music of it's type I have heard, it elevates Barbieri to new heights. "Nevada" and the amazing "Flaw" are crafted so well. Everything about this Album is perfect, the writing, instruments, recording all come together to craft a cd which can only be ignored at your peril.
Simply Amazing, a must own, let's hope Richard makes more music, very soon.
What a great album !.
This is only my 2nd review on Amazon, I love this album so much I couldn't resist adding to the reviews already on here.
I never really got into Japan, but Mick Karn is amongst my top 10 bass players, another of my top ten Percy Jones guests on 4 tracks.
This is a fantastic album, I've already listened to it 5 times on my first day of ownership.
There really isn't a weak track on the album.
And no, 5 stars isn't too many.
very creative - as you would expect from R.B.
Just to set the record straight ,as opposed to the comments stated by the chap beneath me ,Richard has not been confined to the limits of "JAPAN "- they broke up in the early 80,s for gods sake.
If anyone has been the slightly bit aware of recent music i.e. the last 20 years ,you will find that Mr B. has been quite busy involved with a certain group called PORCUPINE TREE.
Ever since helping out with ,initially No Man, R.B. then went on to add textures etc, etc, to the "S.W. in disguise " album Up the Downstairs - the rest as they say, is history.
So he has not exactly been sat on his laurels for the last 15 years. His unique sounds have graced every P.T. album since and he is integral to their now well earned success.( I exclude the Moonloop and certain Metanoia sessions here !?! ).
So please listen to the Indigo Falls album first. A partnership with his wife on vocals plus a list of other well known musicians helping out.
Things Buried is R.B,s first "solo " album proper(in the last 20 years ) and is very good indeed. The familiar textures and sounds are all in place but the standard of production and playing is superb throughout.
My own favourites are the first 4 tracks - they will blow you away, especially if you have a good hi fi set up turned up.This is music that deserves to be played on good equipment - No mp3 type compression here please.
I now await the follow up which, as i write ,is available to pre order - I have.
My only comment, and it is of a positive note ,is i would R.B. to really go for it and release an album (or double) of side long compositions i.e. Steve Roach ,VidnaObmana type albums ,where you are not restricted to 4/5 minute "songs "- let the sounds breath.
Come on Richard ,forget the "market ",lets go ambient again .That doesn,t mean you can,t have some beats in their either.
But wouldn,t you love to just hear the music expand and let it flow without the restriction of track numbers or too much structure. One example i could give is the album Tremors by VidnaObmana ,which although has 11 tracks there are no breaks and the album is just one long piece.
Hope i don,t offend anyone here by this suggestion ,but i really would love to hear R.B. flourish and develop longer pieces of music.
To end, this really is a good album ,get a copy ,get the new one ,get Indigo Falls and then get all the P.T. back catolgue. You will find that R.B. really has been working very much outside the "confines " of Japan.
Quite why people write these sort of ill informed pieces on Amazon is beyond me - get your facts right before you attempt to inform others.(sorry for that i know there is more to life than music - whoops there goes another war in Georgia !?!)
love and peace
richard p.
