Phenomenal Artists and Excellent Albums
Still Life [Digipak]Still Life [Digipak] by Opeth
Buy used from: £3.99
Opeth are godly, and in my opinion this is one of their best albums. All of their others must also be listened to. An uncompromisingly talented and diverse band which I cannot praise enough.
Deloused in the ComatoriumDeloused in the Comatorium by The Mars Volta
Buy new: £4.98 / Used from: £4.09
The Mars Volta have progressed from their 'At-the-drive-in' days. This band are truly original, exciting and interesting. I dont think theres anything they cant do.
SelmaSongs (Dancer In The Dark OST)SelmaSongs (Dancer In The Dark OST) by Björk
Buy new: £6.68 / Used from: £1.59
Wonderful soundtrack to a beautiful, haunting film. Bjork is a musical genius.
PostPost by Björk
Buy new: £4.98 / Used from: £1.67
This one had to be thrown in because it is an excellent album [do not judge Bjork purely on 'it's oh so quiet'] and hyperballad is one of my favourite songs of hers.
In Their Darkened ShrinesIn Their Darkened Shrines by Nile
Buy new: £11.98 / Used from: £4.50
In with a bit of brutality - Nile's consistent historical Egyptian lyrics are fascinating. Nile harness the magic of ancient Egypt with evil vocals: the way only a death metal band can.
Saurian MeditationSaurian Meditation by Karl Sanders
Buy new: £11.98 / Used from: £10.98
In almost complete contrast to Nile, Karl Sanders brings us another masterpiece - Saurian Meditation, a whole album of the odd egyptian chants and ambience found on occasion in Nile. Brilliant.
LateralusLateralus by Tool
Buy used from: £4.46
Maynard James Keenan is one of my favourite vocalists. Tool are an intelligent and consistently brilliant band which I only wish would go on tour this year.
Mer de NomsMer de Noms by A Perfect Circle
Buy new: £9.78 / Used from: £3.54
Can be described as 'poor man's Tool' it is difficult to follow up a band like Tool, but nevertheless A Perfect Circle are a great band, and have some very evocative songs.
Voyage 34: The Complete TripVoyage 34: The Complete Trip by Porcupine Tree
Buy new: £4.98 / Used from: £3.75
I find this particular album completely enthralling, an epic phantasmagorical journey with a man on an LCD trip. An odd, one-off concept for this band. Absolutely brilliant.
Sky Moves SidewaysSky Moves Sideways by Porcupine Tree
Buy new: £12.98 / Used from: £8.24
Another album from Porcupine Tree which, although still ambient shows their uniqueness - Proving they don't only write songs which make you see dripping paintings in your mind's eye!
Kid AKid A by Radiohead
Buy new: £4.98 / Used from: £2.18
Radiohead are an excellent band and definitely deserve more than the indie-esque category they are occasionally put into. Everything in its right place and Idioteque are especially great songs.
ZerospaceZerospace by kidneythieves
Buy new: £14.19 / Used from: £9.07
Although Bjork aside I am no longer a huge fan of most female vocals, Free Dominguez's voice is stunning and the industrial rhythms contribute to a polished, very under-credited album.
DamnationDamnation by Opeth
Buy used from: £5.30
I was trying not to let this turn into just a list of Opeth's albums, but I must just add Damnation as it shows their complete diversity. Mikael Åkerfeldt's vocals are truly awe-inspiring. Masterpiece
Cielo,ElCielo,El by Dredg
Buy new: £12.19 / Used from: £4.89
Upon first buying this album I couldn't quite figure it out.. but after listening to it extensively I've realised it for it's true brilliance.. concept - Sleep Paralysis.. a must hear.
VonVon by Sigur Rós
Buy new: £8.98 / Used from: £6.00
Oddly, I bought this album as the cover haunted me beyond belief. I took the chance, and discovered Sigur Rós. Strange icelandic vocals and 'proggy' ambience are some of their awesome qualities.
Megaton ShotblastMegaton Shotblast by Defacto
Buy new: £9.98
Omar A Rodriguez-Lopez (bass) and Cedric Bixler (drums) at their best yet again. Their absolute talent cannot be denied. DeFacto are another Great project from their experimental genius.
Inside of EmptinessInside of Emptiness by John Frusciante
Buy new: £8.98 / Used from: £7.39
All of John Frusciante's solo albums are brilliant. I couldn't choose just one. A musical genius. Although I am not a big rhcp fan, I am a fan of Frusciante's as he is just phenomenally talented.
NothingNothing by Meshuggah
Buy new: £11.98 / Used from: £5.78
In my opinion Meshuggah are 'intelligent metal' along with the next few bands I am going to list. They combine technicality and insane time signatures with brutality. Cancelled their UK tour though.
GoldGold by Abba
Buy new: £4.98 / Used from: £1.86
Only Joking ! ! ! ;-)
ToxicityToxicity by System of a Down
Buy new: £3.98 / Used from: £1.68
Prison Song is brilliant. This band's intentions and points are good, but they do not take themselves too seriously. Originality and brilliance. Shame about 'violent pornography' *shakes head*
Rage Against the MachineRage Against the Machine by Rage Against the Machine
Buy new: £4.78 / Used from: £1.94
One of the first bands not to just complain, but actually go out and be active about their political beliefs. Their words although 'in your face' are accurate and moving.
... And Justice For All... And Justice For All by Metallica
Buy new: £7.98 / Used from: £4.44
I absolutely do not care what people say about Metallica, this album, ride the lightning and Master of Puppets were a bloody breakthrough. I'm not going to be the first ever St.Anger fan, nonetheless
Chaos A.D.Chaos A.D. by Sepultura
Buy new: £6.78 / Used from: £1.96
I think Sepultura are awesome, one of the few more 'straight-up' bands I still listen to, they are also still good live despite the lack of Max.
SalvationSalvation by Cult of Luna
Buy new: £12.69 / Used from: £6.48
Cult of Luna are excellent, ambience with brutal vocals done in a very balanced way. My two favourite kinds of music rolled into one. Brutality + Ambience.
Variations on a DreamVariations on a Dream by Pineapple Thief
Buy used from: £39.99
Thought I'd conclude with a relatively unknown stunner. Pineapple Thief with the 16 minute epic 'Remember Us' are just excellent. A great end to a list of phenomenal bands.
