| Back in the 90s, Digital-8 camcorders gave users the ability to insert their older analogue Video-8 and Hi-8 tapes into a Digital-8 camcorder in order to capture the recordings digitally into an editing computer using FireWire. At the same time, a Digital-8 camcorder would make digital video recordings that were essentially identical to those made by Mini-DV camcorders but using 8mm (Video-8, Hi-8) tapes. It was the best of both worlds and enabled a convenient "backwards compatibility" between old and new. Sony has effectively ceased development of new models and will soon give up on the format altogether, so unless you have a need to play back your library of 8mm videocassettes it's unadvisable to invest in a camcorder that uses the Digital-8 format. If there are issues you wish to raise about any of the Sony 8mm videocassette formats, check out the SimplyDV Forums, where you'll be given a friendly welcome. | ||
