| Hard Disc Drive (HDD) camcorders make it possible to record video clips without the need to use videocassette tapes or removable DVD discs. These are now very popular, with makers Sony, Panasonic, Canon and JVC forging ahead with new products that record either SD (standard definition) and HD (high definition) movie clips. HDD camcorders that record SD video tend to employ the same video compression system as used by standard DVD disc models - namely "MPEG-2". High Definition HDD camcorders tend to use the MPEG-4 based AVCHD format - one which is being pioneered by Sony, Panasonic and Canon. If you're looking for a modern, easy-to-use camcorder and you don't like the idea of carrying tapes or DVD discs around, then consider one of these models which have typical capacities of 60 GigaBytes or more.
