DV (MiniDV) Camcorders
Digital camcorders that use the DV (also known as MiniDV) format first appeared in the mid-1990s and use tiny videocassettes to record and playback digital video clips.

To digitally copy DV clips from the camcorder to Windows or Apple Mac computers, you can make use of the FireWire - also known as i.Link and DV-link connection. FireWire cables are rarely, if ever, supplied with the camcorder, whereas USB cables often are.

The MiniDV format is now disappearing in favour of camcorders that store clips to Hard Disc Drives and even solid-state memory cards, so consider them carefully.

Note: Other video formats that use similar tape cassettes as DV are DVCAM (a higher-spec version of MiniDV) and also HDV (High Definition tape-based video). These shouldn't be confused with DV, however.
