Niamh In Her Prime!
Of the three Niamh albums I possess this is undoubtedly the best. Most of the songs are traditional ballads, sympathetically interpreted by Niamh. Be warned that some of the songs are unaccompanied, or set to minimal accompaniment, which is not to everyone's taste. Yet,in my opinion, there is not a duff track here, "The Bonny Woodhall", "Orphan's Wedding" and "Black is the Colour" being songs I can't live without! All are absolutely heart-rending tales. This is one of my favourite albums, definitely up there with Cara Dillon and Kate Rusby.
Wonderful CD!
This is a CD that just gets better and better with each listening. I was introduced to Niamh Parsons expressive and soulful singing through her guest appearance on Michael Rose and Ditte Fromseier's fine CD "Contradiction", and find that "In My Prime" has been in my current playlist for the past 12 months - quite an achievement! The musicians who play alongside Niamh do a beautiful job with sensitive, spare and complementary arrangements. My personal favourite tracks are "Bold Doherty" which lilts along in a lovely, unhurried fashion, and "Orphans Wedding". The whole album is a feast for the ears!
