Review of Kote, the album
This album is great. It is one of those that really grows on you, as to the western ear, many of the tracks initally sound fairly similar, but this quickly changes upon repeated playings. The album evokes an eclectic range of images, as the opening strains on some tracks immediately bring spanish moss and scenes of the deep south of the USA to mind, but as they get going, the distinctly African singing and instruments combined with the blues feel makes for quite a quirky experience. With the knowledge that this is really Mali reclaiming a music it gave the west, it makes for quite an experience. Other tracks have a definite moorish / spanish guitar (eg Safi) while others bring to mind Parisian boulevardeering. Above all, it is bluesy and there is some good guitar playing.
