Pure beauty
It's strange how you discover artists that you hadn't previously heard of. I discovered Niamh Parsons through the Green Linnet website after following up links through Patrick Sky (don't ask!!) and thought that this might be worth investigating. For those who bought and liked the highly acclaimed Hearts Desire, be prepared to be taken to another level; I bought Hearts Desire after hearing this and frankly found it somewhat disappointing by comparison.
The Old Simplicity is a truly awesome example of a studio performance being stripped down its bare bones. There is not a single track that I would consider to be overproduced or having excessive arrangement, and there are a couple of instrumental tracks that allow Graham Dunne the opportunity to illustrate the clarity of guitar playing that makes such a wonderful accompaniment for Niamh's voice. And what a voice, but that is already a matter of record.
The songs themselves are a collection of some very traditional, some newer but in a traditional style, but all beautifully and sympathetically treated.
I sincerely hope that this does not represent the peak performance of a wonderful artist, but if it is ever bettered I will certainly struggling for superlatives.
