Review
"Gareth King, an experienced teacher of Welsh to adults, has in the short space of three years published a comprehensive reference grammar of spoken Welsh; a lively, up-to-date introductory language course; and now two further 'grammar-workbooks'. This impressive opus constitutes a solid, much-needed and most welcome contribution to the descriptive grammar literature on modern colloquial Welsh and a considerable achievement....For more than one reason, both the beginner and the professional linguist alike who approaches spoken Welsh with books such as these to hand is a far luckier student than were those of my own generation, and Gareth King is to be thanked....I am sure that for many people these books will have had the effect of putting modern spoken Welsh firmly on the map; let no one underestimate the importance of that."
-Alan R. King, LINGUIST

Great value to people learning Welsh
This book is clearly written, well laid out and an absolute god-send. I use it in conjunction with the same author's 'Modern Welsh - a comprehensive grammar'
I am trying to re-learn the language of my childhood but the methodology currently used to teach Welsh is based on learning phrases parrot-fashion with no explanation of grammar or other underpinning knowledge. Thus progress is somewhere between none-at-all and slow, confidence is destroyed rather than built and the drop-out rate is unacceptably high.
I was all set to give up when I was directed to Gareth King's admirable books. Suddenly the mists of confusion have cleared and I find myself interested, my understanding growing and the will to continue revived.
He explains everything clearly in simple, non-patronising language. With almost every turn of the page I think to myself, "Ah, NOW I understand" and yet another aspect I have struggled with in the clasroom becomes clear.
These are the books to buy if you are struggling to learn Welsh or if you are simply interested in languages and would like to know more about the origins of the Welsh language and how it strings together.
Modern Welsh: A Comprehensive Grammar (Routledge Grammars).
A fantastic book for the Welsh learner
I have been taking Welsh lessons for several months but I found that the classes tended to focus on learning phrases rather than explaining why the language does certain things and why sentences are structured in a particular way. I think a good grounding in grammar is essential to learning a language so I bought this book. I found it really useful for explaining Welsh grammar and I have moved on far quicker than if I was just learning the set phrases. I highly recommend it to anyone who is starting to learn the language.
Welsh is a hard language to learn - get a real step-up with this book
I am learning Welsh, because my children are at a Welsh school, and I want to be able to help them in their homework. I also want to be able to speak to my husband and his family in their first language. Welsh language courses today consist of learning patterns; grammar is rarely explained. The trouble is that I can't learn all the 'patterns' without understanding the grammar; the patterns look like a sea of sentences with very little to distinguish between them. I need to know about the grammar.
I can't recommend this book highly enough - a lot of the language has suddenly become clear to me. Each of the 40 chapters in the book consists of 3 or 4 pages of explanation, followed by 3 or so excercises of perhaps 20 or 30 questions. What really impresses me about this book is that the questions probe all aspects of the grammar point, until you really understand it; its very skillfully done. I did the whole book when I was starting to revise the course in about a week, but I had to work very hard.
If you are learning Welsh, buy this book - its worth every penny!
