Editorial Reviews
From the Author
BBC Wales has been broadcasting for over 80 years. An important part of the service is the production of television and radio programmes for learners of all levels and ages.
Learn Welsh is a new website for Welsh learners, capitalising on the success of the Catchphrase radio series. One fo the most popular features of Learn Welsh is the Language Tools facility, which includes an online grammar guide. In response to numerous requests for this resource to be available in printed form, I am pleased to present a pocket-sized grammar guide.
I am grateful for the ongoing assistance of ELWa, the National Council for Education and Learning for Wales, who have supported this publication.
I hope you will find this guide useful as you become proficient in the language.
Customer Reviews
Frustrating and infuriating
This is a BBC book. I have always believed that the BBC could be trusted to do things well. Not so
The layout is poor. Headings at the bottom of one page, that refer to the text on the following page, do nothing to help the flow of the subjects. This is not an isolated incident, it occurs sufficiently often to be very annoying.
Examples to illustrate each aspect of the grammar are usually good but the explanations of each grammatical point are not always easy to understand.
The 'contents' page is dreadful. 76 pages are simply titled 'Beginners' and the following 46 pages are 'Intermediate/Higher'. No help is given to the reader who is looking for 'verbs', 'mutations', 'prepositions' etc.
There is an index but it is short and, when you consider that one entry in the index is 'Different meanings for words that are similar in English' (page 85) you will realise that it is no more helpful than the rest of the book.
This lack of help is in evidence throughout the main body of the book as well. 'Beginners' 'Intermediate/Higher' etc. and reference numbers appear at the top of each page, the reader has to search carefully through the pages to find the required topic.
I don't understand why the book is written in sections that refer to a stage in learning a language rather than the grammatical points of the language. It is described on the cover as a grammar guide, not a staged learning aid.
Perhaps the most annoying thing of all is that the book started to fall apart after two weeks of limited use.
The only positive thing I can say about this book is that the section on mutations (when you finally manage to find it) is quite good, but it's not worth buying this book for that alone.
It certainly does not do what is says on the cover - it makes no attempt to 'guide' the reader.
It quickly becomes a series of single pages rather than a book.
There are many, far better grammar guides in the market, don't be tempted by the low price of this one, even though it's not a lot it's still money wasted.
