First off, I am a Microsoft Certified Trainer who for years specialised in SMS training and then I drifted in thin client networking. I more or less missed SMS 2003 and recently decided to make a come back into the SMS field.
Firstly the book is written from a small business perspective, everything about the way that the product is utilised/planned/explained in here is aimed at SME customers. If you are working with this product in a Large Enterprise deployment then the scenarios and examples will have extremely limited value. If you have a strong SMS background, particularly SMS 2003, then you will find that the coverage of the new features is very poorly done. One of the reasons I purchased this book as to get some material about managing software updates and mobile devices. The SW Updates section is really quite poor and mobile device management basically says "You can manage mobile devices that run Windows Mobile 2003, 4 and 5." Some of the language used is also not appropriate for a technical book "If this does not work then don't feel sad" The author used to be a technical courseware author for MS so I expected a higher standard of writing.
I could only really recommend this book if you have never previously worked with SMS or if you work in a small SCCM deployment, as the examples of how to deploy software, gather inventory and configure remote control are quite will done. If you are already experienced with the older versions of the product then install it on a test bed and go through the MS TechNet site looking for the new features as they are not covered in enough detail here!
Microsoft® System Center Configuration Manager 2007 Administrator's Companion (PRO-Administrators Companion)
Given a project at work to develop and deploy SCCM. Training currently is not available so hit the books. Sadly this is currently the only book available. The unleashed books will be released in June. The book is at best OK, very light on detail. Does not cover any of the more advanced options and no good as a reference book or even an admin book. Quite disappointed that I wasted my money. Actually the built in help is better.
