Synopsis
As attractive, relatively docile and safe reptiles, boa constrictors are considered some of the best large pet snakes. With advice from three herpetological experts and outstanding colour photos, The Boa Constrictor Manual discusses at length all you need to know about caring for your boa constrictor. Common diseases and disorders are thoroughly covered, with IBD, an epidemic viral disease in captive boas, discussed in great detail. All subspecies and many of the currently bred pattern and colour morphs can be found in this book. It is a must have for both beginner and expert snake keepers.
Customer Reviews
Probably the most comprehensive work of it's kind
This book has to be my all time favourite reference point when it comes to Boa constrictor information. Slickly laid out, beginning with an introduction to the evolution of modern Boid keeping, and leading in to comprehensive yet easy to read format outlining the methods for successfully maintaining and breeding these fine animals.
Topics covered include housing, environmental factors such as heating, lighting, and humidity, feeding, problem snakes, handling, aggression, breeding (a marvelous section incorporating substantial photographic material documenting all stages of the breeding cycle) and also a handy reference guide to common ailments and treatments.
The principal author has been supplemented with chapters by such icons of the herp world as the Barkers and Jeff Ronne (The Boaphile), and there is a colour plate section displaying marvelous photographs of the morphs currently available to the modern herpetoculturist.
Whether beginner or established herpetologist, you can't go wrong with this book. Compared to other books (larger/more expensive, and smaller/cheaper) this is an ideal trade off, providing everything one needs inside one convenient work, at a reasonable cost.
If you only buy one book on Boa constrictors, make it this one!
