Slightly useful if you already know the song
This book is presumably aimed at the amateur folk-singer. However, it provides only the words to the songs and the guitar chords in a 'chord box' style. The suggested chords are all very simple harmonisations that most guitarists of modest ability would be able to work out empirically if they knew the melody of the song. If, however, they don't know the melody of the song, the book is of no help whatsoever as the music for the melody is not provided. So if you know the song well enough to sing the melody from memory, you probably don't need the suggested chords, but if you don't know the melody of the song, then the suggested chords are of no real use. A curiously negative `Catch-22' approach.
Folk Fest - worth a punt
I'm a recent purchaser of these kind of chord songbooks. If you're not into this genre then you're unlikely to get as much benefit out of it as others - yes you'll need to know the tune as there is no melody line. That said, it saved me time working out the chords, they're all here, and getting clarity on the odd word I've sung wrongly for years was refreshing!
Not for the traditionalist
This book was somewhat disappointing as the majority of the songs, in my opinion, were definitely not traditional and leaned more towards the pop end of the "folk" genre. However if you are not after traditional folk songs this book is definitely good value for money. May I also commend Amazon for their superb return/refund system.
