    A superb sub-SLR compromise5
I was wondering whether to go to the expense of an SLR when shopping to replace my Sony CyberShot DSC-W1:
    Sony Cyber-SHOT DSC-W1 Digital Camera

In the end, I went for this and I have not been disappointed. Its response is very quick and it looks great, being not too big and in possession of a great screen to view pictures on. In the box you get a rechargable battery (Lithium-ion NP-BG1), battery charger, shoulder strap, lens cap, lens hood (for use when the sun is out) and lens adapter, which is used to attach the hood and other lenses that you might wish to purchase. There's a USB cable and TV connector, too. I have a Sony Telephoto lens (Sony VCL-DH1758.AE Tele End Conversion Lens) which increases the magnification/zoom by 1.7, and is a great addition.

The pictures that are produced are superb and the super-steady technology ensures no blur if you have shakey hands. Having a 10x optical zoom is incredibly useful, and the images are brilliant, full of colour, as the lens is able to capture plenty of light.

If you don't want the expense of an SLR and you find that your current compact is not up to the job, this is the camera. I have no regrets forking out for this at all!

The camera uses the small Sony memory sticks. My 4GB one holds about 1250 images at 8MP. Of course, lowering the resolution allows more, so 3MP is about 2500.

Sony DSC-H10 Things just got better5

I bought and reviewed the H3 when it came out and have just changed to the H10 these are basically the same camera with just minor changes i.e. screen size/resolution. Was it a worth while upgrade! Well I think it was, the mode dial which had always annoyed me on the H3 has also been changed on the H10 so it now stays on the setting you want. The screen has been changed and is how a 3" Hybrid TFT LCD with 230,000 dots it can be viewed at a very acute angle and in bright sunlight. I was never disappointed with the screen on the H3 but after starting to use the H10 with its bigger/higher resolution screen it would be hard to go back. The image quality is great and the camera is very easy to use.

As with the H3 the H10 use's Sony own format memory sticks so if this is your first Sony allow for the expense of the new memory format.

    'miniature dslr' - P&S 4
The main appeal of this camera at first glance is the fact that it resembles a 'mini me' form of a trad SLR.

Build quality is ok - just, as the flash lid doesn't quite sit flush with the top surface - ingress of dust likely a hazard. The main body is plastic, however the surround of the lense is engraved metal. The door for the memory card & battery is an art to open...Overall the camera has a nice weighty feel to it and the hand grip does help. Buttons on the rear are useful if you have nails! Be aware having no viewfinder does limit it in low light.

The screen will attract fingermarks - if this bothers you then perhaps an anti-glare screen protector will help.

Thankfully there is a 'proper' lens cap to protect the Carl Zeiss lens, there is some comfort in knowing that photos you take will be and are pin sharp - but I have to say that the use of the camera itself is tricky sometimes as the autofocus doesn't catch the right place within the frame always which can result in varying blurred pictures (no focus lock) - oh well! perhaps I've not got the full grasp of this system yet.

The colour options are ok if a little basic. There is no raw setting. The other manual settings as far as I can see are fairly comprehensive, for a basic style of camera, however you have to negotiate the tedium of the menu system.

The manual focus is a bit of a joke as there are fixed focus points...?

The 10x optical zoom is amazingly good and autofocus at this range coupled with the 'constant' setting for anti-shake ensures you will be ok at distance. The 'widest angle' isn't great, be aware if you are in a tight spot.

All said, there are areas this camera surprisingly does shine, in the macro dept - superb! Also the flash is amazingly powerful - it will easily bring very balanced light to the whole of a medium sized lounge room, it can be adjusted for more or less power. It does fail though slightly when you are wanting to reduce red-eye. There is also a fairly effective auto-focus light which can be a little startling for those you are pointing it at! Yes the facial detection works ok too (in case you wonder what is the point, the camera takes a light reading from the surface of the skin as well as making focus adjustments and also ensuring there is optimal quality).

Overall this camera shouldn't be taken TOO seriously as an imaging device, however for rekke's and making simple records it passes. I am sure the average user who doesn't want to lug around a bulky d-slr all day and wants an alternative P&S for some fun and holidays (like myself), I am sure it will suffice. Happy Snapping people!!!
