Product description

The X Series is beautifully designed. It comes in a stunning graphite finish, with aluminium buttons and is built to feel slim yet solid. Stunning 3” OLED widescreen
The X Series has a 3-inch touch panel OLED widescreen which produces clearer and more vibrant images than any other portable media player. It means you can view your favourite movies, YouTube clips or photos in all their glory.

Images look truer and brighter because OLED technology lets you see a wider range of colours. OLED offers a faster response time than standard LED screens which makes it great for watching sport or action packed movies. A high contrast ratio and 180 degree viewing angle means you’ll always see crisp, clear images. Plus OLED uses far less power than standard LCD displays meaning battery life is significantly improved.

Unmatched sound quality
The X Series is the best sounding WALKMAN® to date. Four audio technologies give you an unrivalled sound experience that closely matches what was originally recorded.

S-Master audio technology, currently used in high-end HiFi equipment from Sony, lowers distortion to keep the sound clear regardless of your volume settings. Digital Sound Enhancement Engine cleverly restores some of the high frequency signals that are lost during MP3 compression. Clear Bass gives you a deep, rich bass without distortion. Clear Stereo technology ensures that the sound does not leak from either channel.

Premium in ear headphones are included to ensure that all the audio technologies are maximised for the best possible listening experience. All this makes you feel like you’re with your favourite band in the studio - or experiencing a live orchestra in a concert hall.

Built-in noise cancelling
Because there is nothing more powerful and immersive than great music, Sony has also added Digital Noise Cancelling to the X Series WALKMAN®. Cancelling out up to 99% of ambient noise, you are left to enjoy nothing but the enhanced sound of your favourite tracks.

Noise Cancelling is built in to the X Series so there is no need for separate batteries or the hassle of charging noise cancelling headphones. The X Series even lets you choose your environment and includes an external input mode and adaptor for listening to in-flight entertainment systems.

Hybrid Operation
For added convenience, the X Series can be controlled in two ways - from its touchscreen or by dedicated buttons on the top. This means it’s easy to operate when it’s in your pocket without having to look at the display and you can adjust the volume or change songs easily.

Easy scrolling makes finding music and videos easy

Next generation video
Another great video feature of the X Series is chaptering. The X Series will analyse the video you are watching and create several chapters – similar to chapter selection on most DVDs - so you can quickly and easily get to the place you want.

The X Series scroll function lets you select the playback start point of your videos and can be used to browse through your album cover art to find your music. Scrolling also works on BBC iPlayer content, which you can watch on your X Series. Choose from over 400hrs of your favourite BBC programmes every week.

WiFi connection
The X Series has full Wi-Fi connectivity so you can browse the web, search for music, download podcasts or watch clips from YouTube™. You can also download podcasts automatically to the X Series with a few simple touches of the screen. It’s the easiest way yet to get podcasts onto a WALKMAN®. Just select the podcasts you want and then how regularly you want to download them.

The X Series also lets you link from the music you are listening to straight to videos on YouTube. It’s simple to use. Simply click on the artist and then Direct Link to YouTube, to see videos of that artist or song.

5 stars for sound quality, NO stars for the browser!5

As an avid Sony lover, I just couldn't wait for Amazon to get the X series in stock, so I rushed off to John Lewis to pick one up at full price on the very first day of release! I've owned the A808/A829/S639 as well as a Zune 80/120, a Touch 2G and a Sansa Fuze, so I have other non-Sony points of reference.

Firstly, it's beautiful, I love it to bits, and I forgive all of its flaws, of which there are many, but let's start with the good :)

Sound Quality: I just cannot fault it. It's stunning. And if you've already owned (and enjoyed), any model from the A/S/Z series, then there's no doubt that you'll love the X. I was a bit worried that the s-master digital amplifier might make it sound cold and clinical, but it really doesn't. It's warm, powerful, incredibly clear and so detailed that it makes my previous daps sound foggy in comparison! And crazy though it may seem... it really does seem to open up and sound even better after a few days use, with the soundstage becoming even more 3D.

Build Quality: It's reassuringly solid and the subtle granite effect on the sides acts as a 'gripper' so I don't have to worry about it slipping out of my hands. It's also smaller than an iPod Touch and only slightly bigger than the 808/818.

Function: Drag and drop via Explorer or sync with WMP - both methods are easy, but mass transfer speeds are quite slow, so move small batches at a time if you don't want it to freeze. The volume control is still on the side with the reset button and noise-cancelling switch, and the 'pause' 'forward' and 'rewind' buttons are on top along with the headphone socket. And unlike the Touch, it's easy to change tracks or 'pause' while it's in your pocket.

Screen: The 3-inch OLED screen is beautiful and responsive. Demo videos look great and colours are vibrant and clear. The screen itself is glass, but actually feels like thick plastic and it's also a total fingerprint magnet, so get a screen protector if that's an issue. Visibility in sunlight is good so long as you turn up the brightness to maximum.

Radio: The FM reception and sound quality is very good. To add a station, just tap the screen and select 'add'.

I haven't got round to testing the noise cancelling yet, but it's only functional with the supplied earphones, which are similar to the very decent EX082's that Sony has been packing with their later models.

    Now for the bad...

Wi-Fi: Connection to my network was easy, but the Netfront browser is slow, awkward to use and text inputting is a joke! Don't expect it to replace Safari or any other decent browser because it won't. It certainly can't replace my iPod Touch in that respect. That's not to say it isn't usable, it's just very basic. Use it to check emails and have fun with the built-in support for youtube (which works very well), but don't expect much more than that.

Photos: They might look great, but there's no slideshow option, so if you have a large collection to view, you have to keep tapping the screen to advance to the next one. My Zune and Touch had slideshow options, and it's a really useful feature that Sony left off for reasons that only they know why.

    And the inexcusable...

Newly missing: No 'now playing' once you leave the music folder, no 'go to artist'... and no scrolling track title either, so if the track is longer than thirteen characters... you can't view it all. Those features were all available on previous models and have since been taken away, nice one Sony.

Still missing: No lossless support (unless you use WAV files) - no gapless support (unless you use WAV files!!)... and no on-the-fly playlists?? Even the Sansa Fuze has a simple 'to go' playlist option and yet Sony couldn't implement one for its flagship model?

It defies belief, but it's true. So you have to be at your computer to think about what you want in advance... then create them... and then transfer them, which is simply no good for those of us (me!), who like to create them spontaneously. A really bad move by Sony and it serves them right if it alienates a lot of potential buyers, which I'm sure it will do.

Anyway, despite all my griping, I wouldn't swap it for anything. The sound quality is stellar and that's all that matters to me. Build quality is superb, the hardware controls are placed with thought, and the screen is a treat! And since the current discounted Amazon price is only slightly more than my A829 cost a year ago, it's fantastic value for double the capacity. If you want something with incredible sound, this is it - if you want a decent browser, on-the-fly playlists, and support for lossless formats such as FLAC/WMA lossless - this isn't it!

Buy the Sony as a 32GB music player and view anything extra as a bonus.

    great - but needs tweaking...3
i'm only really interested in music - so all the 'other stuff' is pretty gimmicky as far as i'm concerned.

so, i'm very pleased there is a noticeable improvement on what was already great sound quality on the A828. The X is 'cleaner and clearer'. Although there's a glitch in the firmware that means it doesn't Repeat properly - that is, it gets to the last track in a playlist and doesn't go on to play first track, it just picks some random track from another playlist and starts playing - needs fixing.

also, there's a scroll feature that allows for scrolling of cover art. activate this from within a playlist and you'd think you'd scroll the playlist cover art, right. No. you're suddenly scrolling your whole library. I mean who checks this stuff?!

playlists are now only accessible via secondary menu and as others have comments, Now Playing is missed...

As others have commented, it's inexcusable it doesn't support a Lossless codec - one of the many, many; 'what were sony thinking?!' questions... (their shareholders are probably asking many of those type of questions right around now too)...

all-in-all, i'm please with the X 'cause for me it's about the music and quality is noticeably up -- but sony continue to bug me for their incompetence in other areas...

Sony's flagship is a worthy contender for your wishlist.4
    Sony Walkman NWZX1060B X Series with 32GB
It's got everything you could ask for in a PMP(portable media player); Music/video support for pretty much every format (besides the lossless ones), wi-fi capabilities, and a very slick touch screen interface. The sound from this thing is awesome, even with out-of-box headphones. I hate to say this to all the apple enthusiasts out there, but Sony sound really does out-do anything i've heard from any of the iPod range. It also has the FM radio, and the cover flow album scroller. (which is cool, provided your album art is the right size) The Youtube application is VERY slick, but unfortunately the player will not stream from BBC iPlayer, despite me being under the impression it was. (you have to download it your pc and then transfer it, which is such a let-down) It also has noise cancelling capabilities, which seem okay, but compared to the standalone Sony headphones you can buy, it doesn't quite drown out that much noise.

What the Sony isn't so good at is well, compared to the iPod touch, the web browser. It's basically the same as what you'd get on a WAP website for your phone. It just feels, a bit half done. It's pretty poor , and there is no extra apps/support for the player(yet). I've read rumours about extra app capability, but it depends how many people buy one I suppose.

I personally love the player for just being different.
It's touch screen interface is very responsive, and the OLED screen is very very crisp. The drag and drop software makes thing dead simple, and it'll even take songs from iTunes as well as mp3's and the like.A good, solid player that feels, sounds & looks nice.

I chose this over the touch & i'm happy to own one, it's worth a look :)

    Pro's
+It's different; as the iPod's are so common now.
    +Good Sound
    +Vivid Screen
    +Responsive touch interface
+Youtube streaming (which initially the touch couldn't do)
+Decent battery life-similar to the iPod touch- (33 hours for music, about ten if you're using the browser/video player)
+Very efficient, simple drag & drop software

    Cons
-Poor Browser (The iPod touch's is far better)
    -The screen's size isn't a normal type size, which means;
    - Most pictures you put on it yourself won't fill the screen
-Same with video, leaving you with black slits either side.
-The processor is a bit slow, meaning album art loads slower than i'd like.
-It will continually be compared to the iPod touch.
-It doesn't yet have app support.

Overall, if you want to be a bit different, go with the Sony. It really is a sweet player. Want to go the 'blinkered' iPod route? Get the Touch.
    They're both worthy contenders.
