Customer Reviews
A brilliant and cheap 16gb Mp3 player
First of all i'm going to say it straight and admit that for over 10 years now im sony's b*tch and no too fond of apple, however i will try to keep this review as unbiased as i can.
Design
The Sony in my opinion definitely looks a lot better thatn its main rival the nano. The screen has 2.4 inch which is great for watching video (if you manage to put any on that machine, but i'll come onto that. Some people have pointed the old-fashioness of this mp3 player as it has a s-pad unlike the touch circle of the nano. I for one am pretty happy as i have owned a nano however i found using the wheel inprecise when selecting a specific song, and i can't say that i'm a patient person.
Sound
The sony definitely sounds better than the nano. I'm not a sound expert but right from the start you realise that th sony has much more depth and crispness to the sound. The headphones although not the greatest thing ever deliver a good sound and are definitely better than the garbage which apple supplies. On the negative side sometimes it does feel that the walkman is putting a bit too much emphasis on bass, but i kinda like as the usual type of music i listen to is metal, however even if you aren't into heavy music the bass doesn't get disturbing and of course you have an equalizer option.
Video
This is where the player gets minus poits as i wasn't able to put a single video from my computer onto the player as it requires a specific format which i believe is mp4 (not really a pc man)and i never tried to reformat a video, but before you start putting negative comments i do realise that maybe im just extremely bad with computers, which i don't deny, therefore other people may not experience the same problem.
Putting music On
I'm pretty certain a 3 year old kid nowadays could do this- drag and drop. Go to the file with your music drag it and drop it in to the music file of the walkman. It takes about 2-3 seconds to transfer a 5mb song.
Getting it Up and Ready
Another negative i gotta point out is that the first time i plugged the player in to my PC it froze, luckily pressing the reset button did the trick. Than the player froze once more after i have first put music on it but i did the same to resolve it. The point im trying to make is that this resolution isn't written in the manual therefore it took me at first around 15 minutes until i figured the resolution out.
Durability
I had this player only for a weak but from my experience with sony products it will definitely last a few years.
All in an all this is a great mp3 player with an amazing sound, however i do need to deduct a star for the restrictive video formatting but otherwise i would definitely recommended it over a nano and it is cheaper as well.
This is the same player i had 2 years ago , its just in a different case and its a different colour!!
The walkman has a large bright screen which i hoped for, crisp video , great headphones( worth £30 seperate) , great music playback....but thats it! I'm not saying its a bad player but it lacks any ooooompphhh, there's nothing to be excited about here. When i started fiddling around with it, it seemed excatly like the a808 i bought 2 years ago, just in a different case and a different size screen. What you must know is, if u want a no nonsense player , this is the perfect one for you. i would hate to say this , but if u want something that will make you feel 'wooww this is cool' get an ipod. I owned a touch and a classic, when u compare music quality 'SONY IS KING' but if u want more variety go for IPOD or something else. Summing up, this player is ok 4/5 on quality but 1 or even 0 for innovation because all sony has done is change screen size! therefore 3/5. Thanks for reading and i hope this helps you decide which player you would go for
6Month long-term owner review.
Owned one of these for about 6 months now, and am still massively impressed with it.
The sound quality is by far the best I have heard in ANY portable music device on the market (and I tried alot). It's got detail that other players simply lose. The bundled headphones are extremely good quality, but I have been using some Shure in-ear headphones, which it drives with no problems at all.
Loading music is very easy, drag and drop in Explorer, or use Windows Media Player (I use a program called MediaMonkey, which has not problems with this device). In Mac and Linux, it's displayed as a USB storage device, and you can drag and drop there too.
The UI on the player is slick and responds very quickly. The display is nice to look at, and the screen is proper glass and scratch resistant (no screen protectors required).
If I had to change this player in one way (and it's a difficult thing to find a single thing wrong), it would be they really needed to makea 32GB model. I came from a previous player with the 20GB HDD, so I had to lose 4GB of music from it. However the ease of loading compared to my previous player makes this less of an issue. Had this been a 32GB model, it would be totally flawless. As it is, a 16GB model is pretty close, and still worthy of 5*
If only Apple made players this good.
