Customer Reviews

Excellent adaptation of a classic5
I'm currently watching this with my young daughters and they are absolutely fascinated with this. I remember watching it at their age when the BBC were showing the original and it feels very special indeed to now be sharing this with my children, many years on.

The quality of acting is superb and the sets are deliciously retro which do nothing but add a particularly Dickensian atmosphere to the series.

We will be watching the final episode later on and have thoroughly enjoyed this heirloom edition of an excellent BBC costume drama.

Give this production a miss!1
Unfortunately over many years I have been spoilt by the BBC with their marvellous dramatic productions of various classic novels from the Brontes, Dickens and many other authors and was very much looking forward to the same from this title but should have anticipated what was to come on seeing the date it was originally made. Even after allowing for a great performance from Trevor Peacock as the lecherous, nasty Daniel Quilp it was I felt a letdown. The sets were so obviously "cardboard" in a lot of cases, the acting not in my opinion very good and all in all gave a definite appearance of being done on the cheap or at least when the BBC were in their infancy in producing such great series. Finally to me it was too comedic. Not a good buy!
