Editorial Reviews

CD Description
With a gritty, rock 'n' roll sound heavily indebted to The Clash and their hometown-heroes Oasis, Twisted Wheel's soundis heavier and punkier than most of their indie contemporaries. Their eponymous debut album was produced by Oasis' prolific super-producer Dave Sardy, and arrives amongst a furoreof industry hype. They are surprisingly also capable of genuinely reflective moments on songs such as 'What's Your Name' which seem to draw from Pete Doherty's more contemplative side.

Great album! Let them have it all, bad candy and you stole the sun standout tracks, real energy and nice to hear something with some balls. The one beauty of the album is bouncing bomb, with its swooping chorus. Recommended if you want no nonsense tunes, extra grit than your usual indie...

Here we go again...2
Yet another underwhelming idie-guitar effort. I was disappointed that I couldn't get into this more, as sometimes there's nothing better than some uncomplicated, straight-ahead, three-chord thrashing. Sadly, although at first listen it sounds fairly fresh, by the second play (quite literally) it sounds tired and two dimensional. It isn't helped by the poor lyrics and the vocalist's rather unlovely voice. If I had to liken it to any sound or genre I'd probably describe the overall feel and execution as punk (but without any of the excitement and visceral thrills that usually entails). More specifically they particularly remind me of Stiff Little Fingers (whose track `At The Edge' could possibly have been used as a musical template for much of Twisted Wheel's album. See All the Best). Who also came to mind were under-appreciated (now disbanded) act 60 ft Dolls' album The Big 3 who were covering similar ground more than ten years ago (think Sterophonics but with a greater punk sensibility) - and this is going for as little as just over one English pound on Amazon's marketplace!

Bottom line: avoid this - buy SLF or 60ft Dolls instead

Plenty of promise but no originality yet3
This is not a bad album in any way, shape or form but it is singularly lacking in any originality. Twisted Wheel have clearly done their homework and swooped like magpies to grab ideas from other bands that have hit prominence in recent years.

As such, there are tracks that sound like The Arctic Monkeys, or The Libertines or The Pigeon Detectives with others sound a bit like a mash up of all three. Not that this is a problem, if you are going to steal, steal from the best. Imitation is the sincere form of flattery after all.

Trouble is that whilst the songs sound derivative they don't quite hit the heights of the aforementioned bands material. There is no killer tune on here that blows you away. Plenty of perfectly agreeable listens but nothing that worms into your skull and gets you humming it for hours afterwards.

Like I said at the start of my review, it is not a poor album - but it does just plonk itself into the middle tier of its genre. Neither good nor bad, so basically ok.

I would stress that the ingredients are here for Twisted Wheel to go up several notches. If they can make a bit more of an identity for themselves and find that awesome hook or chorus a few times they could be very good indeed.

One to keep an eye out for then, but this album is probably only worth picking up if it's at a good price and you're a fan of the bands listed earlier but fancy some different tracks.
