Cassel Guide to Written English5
This book is suitable for both the Student of English and the writer alike. The first half of the book is dedicated to the "nuts and bolts" of the English language. Here parts of speech such as nouns, verbs, adjectives etc and various types of phrase are defined and their uses explained. As one who learnt English on my mother's knee, there were many details in this section I had not only forgotten, but never knew I needed. I could see the value of this section to someone learning English as a second language but I was surprised by what it still managed to teach me - and I thought I knew this language!

I found the second half of this book, which details how the language should be used, even more fascinating than the first. The art of weaving text into interesting and logical sequences is discussed, gradually building from the structure of sentences, through paragraph formulation, to eventually discuss in great detail how to form a style and viewpoint for an entire piece of writing. Literally, this book takes the reader from individual words to entire essays in gentle steps, explaining each step along the way. I thoroughly recommend this book to anyone learning English as a second language or to native English speakers who wish to explore the use of the language in writing their own material.
