Editorial Reviews

Synopsis
This seventh edition of Mountaineering: The Freedom of the Hills has been completely revised to reflect rapid changes in mountaineering, including the development of new techniques and the introduction of new and improved equipment. Written by experienced climbers, it maintains the high standards set by previous editions, teaching safe, time-tested techniques and emphasizing the use of sound judgement in the mountains. New chapters have been added on waterfall ice and mixed climbing, stewardship and access issues and physical conditioning for climbing. This is the definitive manual on mountaineering, recognised and used worldwide and regarded as the essential tool for all climbers.

Customer Reviews

Outstanding5
I bought this book before going on a mountaineering course in India . Simply everything is covered in this book in fantastic detail from the correct clothing, to building snow shelters and expedition planning. This should be your first and last purchase for anyone loooking for a book which encompasses the theory and practical aspects of mountaineering.

The standard text on mountain climbing summer and winter5
This is THE comprehensive text on mounting climbing both summer and winter. It does not cover all aspects in depth, but as a reference and an introduction to mountain climbing (as opposed to rock climbing at your local crag) it has few equals. If I would recommend only one book on allround climbing it would be this. This edition feels more up-to-date on modern techniques and equipment than the previous, even if there are only a few years between them. Drawbacks? Yes, it can feel a lot like hearing a middle grade school teacher when reading the chapters, the tone is very lecturing.

A very good all round textbook5
This book covers everything. It will not tell you how to climb mountains if you have never done it before, if you have, you will find a massive amount of information covering everything you have have ever had to think about on the hills.
