Wonderful Book, Wonderful Series
This is brilliant in a typical Sunflower Books way. The walks cover most degrees of ability, with shortened versions of most for the less energetic/able, and picnic places. I have some degree of arthritis in my knees, and was totally unfit when we started our holiday, but being able to pick walks of different lengths and grades each day, we built up gradually and my stamina improved. What's more amazing is that after a creaky, painful start to the two weeks, by the end of it I had no pain and my knees were not swollen any more. This is largely thanks to this book, my patient husband and a walking pole!
Also, there are good snippets of local history/nature/foods etc, and updates of the walks are available by post or internet, which lessens the chance of confusion when a path is closed. Valerie even gives her phone number as a guide should you need one, which inspires confidence.
Walking in beautiful Mallorca
We have often looked at the mountains of Mallorca from 35000 feet and thought that there must be some great walks around them. So, in February, off we went, armed with walking boots, rucksack and Valerie's book. In four intensive days, we did three of the walks in the book, and they were truly wonderful. We will return very soon to 'do' the others. The book is beautifully written and the routes accurately described. An OS map would be useful to give a wider spacial awareness of the area. The restaurants were excellent and inexpensive (20€ a head, all-in ish). If you like mountains and walking, you will like Mallorca and this book is a must.
Super guide to the Real Mallorca . Much inside information
We've done various of these walks and eaten at a few of the places recommended. Especially appreciated the lamb half-way up a mountain! (See walk around Alaró). It's great to have the recipes-not always easy to get authentic ones otherwise.
Mostly easy to follow- we've seen lots of walkers with this book, so a good number of people are obviously finding it a useful aid. It's a creative supplement to other more prosaic hiking books written by others who seem to know Mallorca less thoroughly. Here, you get a real "feel" of the place. All information on relative difficulty of walks, transport to and from the starting/ending points, maps, etc., seem accurate as we have tried them out.
We have given this book to others as a gift. Always gets a good review!
