Cruisers Beware!
If, like one reviewer of 'The Mallorca Connection', you read Peter Kerr's 'Bob Burns Investigates' stories and end up comparing them with the work of contemprary 'Tartan Noir' authors, then you have missed entirely what Kerr's 'crime' writing is all about. It's like trying to compare Dixieland Jazz with Heavy Metal Rock. A futile exercise.
The most obvious difference between the two approaches to writing is the sense of humour involved. Kerr's is what the Scots call 'pawky', which, roughly translated, means wry, dry, droll, observant, whimsical, mischievous, yet sometimes quietly sardonic as well. If you don't get the subtleties, then best stick with the written word's equivalent of Heavy Metal.
This book finds Kerr enjoying himself weaving a yarn that may tempt fans of cruising to think twice about booking up for another trip - but only if they take the author's gibes and 'revelations' too seriously. It's all good escapist stuff, though with enough twists and turns in the plot to ensure that you keep your wits about you.
In any event, try to read this book with your tongue firmly in your cheek, because that's obviously the way it has been written. As usual, Peter Kerr deftly paints entertaining and colourful pictures, but with 'noir' refreshingly absent from his palette. Lang may his 'pawky' lum reek!
Brilliant
Another winner from Peter Kerr.
Read this one whilst on a cruise earlier this year and was not disappionted, humourous with a half decent plot I enjoyed it from cover to cover.
Cruising along with another cracker!
Another fun and humourous whodunnit from maestro story teller, Peter Kerr. It's incredible how this author has managed to put togther such an impressive series that is never dull or predictable in content. Here's to his next plot brain teaser!
