Hip and Groovy
Although musically trained, I've only recently discovered the joys of hand drumming and Alan Dworsky's books on the topic have been invaluable. Hip Grooves for Hand Drums extends the repertoire of his earlier books to include funk, hip hop, rock and other forms, as well as taking in less conventioanl time signatures when playing rhythms. I really enjoyed using the book which is well structured, not too much reading and follows the same method of notation as the others in the series. Add to this a CD which allows you to play along with it, you can have your own drumming group in your living room!
Good book for beginners
I'm about one third into this book at the moment and I've found it very useful. This is the book to buy if you have a djembe or other hand drum and want to use it to play in a rock/pop band or in church with contemporary music. I initially bought the "How to play dejmbe" in the same series by the same author - it was good but that book focuses on West African rhythms and multiple drums playing at once (a drum circle) - so if that's what you want, go for that book. Problem is, a lot of the African rhythms, great as they are, won't fit very comfortably with a western rock or pop song. It you want to play along to more "western music" this is the one for you.
