Editorial Reviews

CD Description
25 years after his first album, NATURALLY, J.J. Cale created GUITAR MAN, an album made up of hypnotic grooves forged out of elegantly simple components. The album is largely a solo affair, with only scattered additional accompaniment, suchas on the incredible opening tune, "Death in the Wilderness". Otherwise, Cale plays every instrument, adding particularly strong guitar work to the mix.
Remarkably, Cale's easygoing front-porch character is no less warm when he utilisessubtle keyboards and electronic percussion. With the exception of his arrangement of the traditional "Old Blue" (popularised by the Byrds in one of their later incarnations), the songs are all Cale originals. Besides songs that mine the familiar thematic territory of love, longing, and taking it easy, there's a handful that address world ills such as the environment and crime. He manages to tackle these issues without ever being didactic. However, he was sufficiently impassioned to include the lyrics to all the songs this time out. The title song and "Low Down" are two Cale classics that contain familiar lyrical and musical phrases that sound completely timeless when he sings and plays them.

Cale nearly solo4
Judging by the lack of other reviews I'm in a minority in thinking this is one of late period Cale's better efforts. From the stoned humour of Days Go By to the urban paranoia of This Town there's plenty of good music to get excited about. Try Death in the Wilderness for the arrangement and guitar playing for starters or Lowdown for some typical Cale style relaxed shuffle. This is as near as it gets to a Cale solo album. While it won't win many new converts it's a good answer to those who say he's just been repeating himself for the past thirty odd years.

I don't usually review albums on Amazon because it's easy to be too critical but on this occasion I have to comment on the lack of top musicians on this album. What in the world was JJ thinking ... playing all the instruments himself! One of the coolest things aboout most of his other albums was the fact that he has some of the finest musos in the world jamming along. While I commend Cale for being a multi-instrumentalist a lot of the songs on the album don't quite have the same groove as his earlier records. However, if you're like me and have most of his records then this is worth getting. It's a big improvement on Travel Log!
