Entice wildlife into surburbia with this wonderful book.
This book contains everything you could ever need to know about bringing local wildlife into your garden. No matter how small your little plot of land is, it is possible, with care and the knowledge you will gain from 'BACK GARDEN NATURE RESERVE', to entice more birds, insects and small mammals into your OWN garden. Most importantly perhaps, this book also tells how to enjoy our new feathery/furry/creepy little friends, with details of nesting/viewing boxes to make and even handy photography hints. There is a wonderful section on design and construction of ponds. Chris Packham is a very witty, knowledgeable and unusual writer, with strong views and ideas that perhaps not every keen gardner will agree with, although I must say that I do. Cat owners beware, perhaps its time to take a little more responsibility for your pets!! Perhaps a bell on your cats collar could help? Or you could try (like I do myself) a figure of eight harness and 'proper walks' in the garden for your cats, trained from kittens they enjoy trips out several times each day - and the birds and woodmice in my garden are very happy too - well, they would be if every other house in my street didn't own a cat or three!! You may think I am straying from the subect of my review - but believe me - they play a big role in this book!! If you love wildlife or if you would love to learn a little more about it, then this book truly is a must - I couldn't be any more keen on it!
How to fill your spare time and help nature
I read this book with great interest as my children love natural history and are constantly asking me to do things in the garden to draw in the wildlife.
Chris Packham's book was therefore the one they had been waiting for and the inspiration for various projects to commence in our garden space.
A nice change form 'golf-green' lawns!
A beautifully written book that provides inspiration for everyone with a garden and a love of nature - from the woodwork enthusiast to the nature lover (although a combination of both is preferable). Not only is it clear, colourful, and a pleasure to behold, Chris Packham has a writing style that amuses, enthuses and enthrals. There are a wide variety of ideas contained in this book - so whatever the size of your garden, you will get some inspiration and pleasure. If you are not the type of person who is satisfied with golf-green style lawns, neat borders and 'water-features', but gets more pleasure from watching nature unveil it's infinite wonders - this book will be an invaluable source. There is also a lot of satisfaction in knowing that in a world where nature is consistantly destroyed by man, we can do our own little part to reverse the trend.
