Amazon.co.uk Review
When some people first heard "I Want Her" from this 1987 recording, they dropped what they were doing and ran to a record store (this journalist included). The single is the prototype for what Teddy Riley, who did the drum and keyboard programming on the song, would call "New Jack Swing". It has hip-hop's rhythmic chatter and R&B's fierce up-tempo drive. Although Riley contributes to most of the songs on this disc, Sweat has a different direction in mind. He aspires to be--and with future releases became--the king of the slow jam. His warm, deep tenor and his intelligently crafted songs set the standard for the pre-Maxwellian lover man. --Martin Johnson
CD Description
Although only "I Want Her" crossed over to the pop charts, hitting the Top Five, the five singles from Keith Sweat's debut album were prominently featured on R&B radio and dance floors from the winter of 1987 through the fall of 1988. Produced by nascent superstar producer and eventual label head Babyface, MAKE IT LAST FOREVER was arguably the very first "new jack swing" album; that style's characteristic mix of old-school soul-man vocals and hip-hop-influenced arrangements is all over this album.
The most obvious nod to soul tradition is in Sweat's unapologetically bombastic cover of the Dramatics' early-'70s lost-love ballad "In the Rain", but Sweat's no-nonsense vocals on the opening "Something Just Ain't Right" and the moving love jam of the title track are equally impressive. Though Babyface's characteristic production style would soon become so ubiquitous that by the early '90sit would be the dominant sound of R&B, his work on this album still sounds fresh.
Customer Reviews
funky beats, soothing harmonies and soulful vox, perfect!
This CD defines 80's contemporary soul. The advent of electronic instruments is a major influence on this album utilizing the popular TR-808 and 909 series which provide this album with the powerfully romantic backing beats. The great use of analogue synths provide the sexy solos that swirl around the listener embracing the ears to prepare them for a slow dance. The wonderful duet with Jacci McGhee on the title track is certain to get anybody into that amorous mood with the soothing beats of the drum kit complimented by the chimings of triangles and soft synth strings.
Definately an album for when you're feelin' all loved up!
Teddy's break through project......,
know this is Keith's Album, but for me it was an early introduction to the GREAT early work of Teddy Riley, the father of New Jack Swing.
I have just purchased this CD via Amazon, and in his thank yous at the end of the booklet, no mention is made to Teddy's contribution(Most of the songs on display, were either co-written co-produced or both by keith and Teddy)
Anyway, onto the CD. Considering this was releashed in 1987, this CD still sounds fresh, and vibrant 18 years later. I would also go as far as saying that this is Keith's most complete work. This could because a) This was a debut album, with a new style, particulary on the up tempo tracks b)There is a good mix of uptempo well written tracks, along side Keith's soon-to-be notorious slow jam cuts. The majority of ths album falls in this category. Of these,'Right and a wrong way', 'How Deep is your Love',are particular favourites. Being a New jack swing nut, it's with the up, to mid tempo where this album resonates with me, with the stand-out being 'I want Her'.Even today this cut sounds fresh, exciting and vibrant. The other stand out up tempo joint, would be 'Don't stop the Love', which is a good way too end the CD. Lastly, a very important often neglected part of this album is the contribution that Jacqi Mcghee makes. As well as backing vocals, she is the female lead on: the title cut. Great voice
Pure class from start to Finish!
I purchased this on actual vinyl many years ago!
When I met my partner he had the CD and the cassette!
This is a beautiful CD in every sense of the word.
Keith Sweat takes you effortlessly through track after romantic track and never jolts you out of the 'smooth groove' that you are in.
If you have any soul atall, this is for you!
The memories made from listening to this will 'Last Forever!'.
ENJOY!!
