Synopsis
Brothers Jin-Seok (Bin Won) and Jin-Tae (Dong-Kun Jang) come from a family whose unremitting struggle with poverty has led them to place all their hopes in Jin-seok, the younger of the two. His older brother Jin-Tae shines shoes in order to raise money to send him to university, while their mother runs a noodle shop; the patriarch has passed away, leaving the little family to fend for themselves. Their precarious aspirations are shattered by the outbreak of the Korean War, when Jin-Seok is drafted and Jin-Tae joins up as well, in order to work for his brother's release. He has neither the influence nor the financial means to send Jin-Seok back home; his only hope lies in the acceptance of dangerous missions that will earn him the Medal of Honour and his brother's release. Jin-Seok, however, does not understand his brother's intentions, and mistakes his valiant bravery for misplaced patriotism and greedy ambition, until finally and tragically he is confronted by the truth. Upon its release, this moving war drama became the highest-grossing film in Korea.

Customer Reviews

Best ever5
I am not the biggest fan of war films, but enjoyed Saving Private Ryan and Full Metal Jacket, but this one is the best. Forget it has subtitles because it doesn't matter as there isn't an awful lot of dialogue and it's very easy to follow.
It is the moat graphic war film I have ever seen, making Ryan look insipid. It was the most expensive film ever made in Korea, and watching it you will see why. Fantastic photography, beautifully acted with a simple story. It is also very emotional, and I dare you not to cry when watching it.
It also won many awards in its home country
I think I must rate this as one of my favourite ever, and I think anyone who watches it could easily feel as I do about it

Without doubt the best war film5
I have Saving Private Ryan and Black hawk Down as well as the Rambo trilogy and the great escape and therefore have a good view on war films. This film is unbelievably underrated or perhaps not recognised as a good war film. I'd just like to say that there has never been a film that really got to me or made me feel so emotional. Brotherhood is both a war film and a story about two cose brothers who eventually fade apart due to the events of war. The film is long and impressive in every scene with the climax being far greater than most war films. The film is in japanese but totally tlerable as there are subtitles. I think you can change the language somewhere but not definate. i really do feel that this is worth every penny and would be watched over and over. You must get this if you want to truly understand a fabulous and emotional war film.
