A batsman's bat breaks in half mid-shot. He trips on the piece of broken blade, knocking it back into the stumps. Is he out hit wicket? At Canterbury (in the old days, before the big tree died) a ball strikes the upper branches and leaves of the tree but still clears the boundary. What do you signal? A batsman is struck on the helmet. Dazed, he walks into his stumps. The fielding team appeal. What do you decide? Paul Trevillion, Europe's foremost sports illustrator, has teamed up with ex-professional cricket and test umpire John Holder to produce this entertaining and informative guide to the laws of cricket. Based on the hugely popular "Observer" comic strip and embellished with anecdotes from John Holder's thirty-five years in top class cricket, this book is a treasure trove for all fans of this beautiful, compelling - sometimes frustrating - game.

Review
"It is an utter joy ... this book is informative, contemporary and, most of all, a thing of timeless beauty." --All Out Cricket, July 2009
From the Back Cover
'I've had my moments with umpires. There's no hiding that. I'd call them disagreements rather than arguments, but still, it's been lively over the years. But I can also say, hand on my heart, I have total respect for the job they do. This book proves that umpiring is the hardest job in cricket.' Shane Warne
In a village match a cow suddenly steps through a damaged hedge on to the pitch. The batsman strikes the ball, which bounces off the cow's rump and is caught. Is he out?

Fab and Fun
Fab book could not put it down some of Illustrations are out of this world and the explanations by John Holder on the laws of cricket unravel so many miss conceptions I think this should be the new cricket Bible
wonderful
a really wonderful book- my nephew (12) is absolutely hooked (it's great to see him with a book rather than with his Xbox....) It's a proper old-fashioned 'album' type of hardback, full of brilliant art and so much information. It also looks really expensive, so it's a real talking point if you leave it on the coffee table!
Great book
Really enjoyed this book and bought it after reading good reviews in the cricket mags and having frequently read the scenarios in the Sunday Observer. A good series of testing questions and nicely illustrated scenarios and portraits for anyone with an interest in cricket. Recommended+++
