An Excellent Introduction to Realism Painting

Product Description

Each book in Taschen's Basic Art movement and genre series includes a detailed introduction with approximately 30 photographs, plus a timeline of the most important events (political, cultural, scientific, sporting, etc.) that took place during the time period. The body of the book contains 35 of the most important works of the epoch; each is presented on a 2-page spread with a full page image and, on the facing page, a description/interpretation of the work, portrait of the artist, and biographical information. Art Imitates life in the work of the realists. Through painting, photography, and sculpture, 20th century realists invoke reality in works that capture what Freud called "the uncanny" - the inexplicable strangeness of something which seems at once real and not real.

Realism5
Realism from the Taschen Basic Art Series delves into the various artists who produced photo real images. On saying this there are photographers work included. The first chapter The Truth Of The Visible is a discussion of historical reference to Realism in art. The book is set out in no particular order of history but takes a two page look at each artist with a particular piece of work, then discusses aspects of the work. Artists include Georgia O'keefe, Richard Erste, Walker Evans, Duane Hanson, Edward Hopper, Otto Dix, to name but a few of the 35 artists covered.
The book is a real look at what the artist's intentions were behind the pieces of work shown.
Overall the book is well worth it for those who have just discovered Realism, for those who already know of this subject, it is a useful reference book
