Customer Reviews
Some of the most moving books I have ever read.
Penelope Wilcock is a true story teller. Her Hawk and Dove Trilogy takes you to another world where in a monastry in a bygone age there is poverty, strictness and a discipline that would quench even the most hardy of souls. Our central character is the abbot. Given the name Father Columba (which means 'Dove')on taking up his office he quickly becomes known by his baptised name Peregrine (the Hawk). His hawklike features and initial temperament are more suited to this name than a dove. Father Peregrine is a most unusual man. Life's adversities try to embitter him but eventually just change him for the better. The depths of his insight and compassion, his humility and love coupled with an amazing strength make him unforgettable long after the book is finished. You are left feeling that if you could just meet such a person life would never be the same again. At the same time it is as he becomes more Christlike that these admirable traits become more evident and the realisation comes as you read that his character is based on Jesus, without suggesting that Jesus was less that perfect as Father Peregrine was .At all times he tries to help his noviates and brothers with their struggles. To turn life's harshness and at times seemingly endless battles into something God can and will use for His Glory. To realise that the end result of the things we come against in life will, if we let them, produce a better you. I have laughed out loud and wept as though my heart would break while reading this trilogy. Don't miss reading it or you'll miss some of the most valuable lessons on life.
