Product Description

"The Broons Days Oot" - is a guide to days out in Scotland, with extensive coverage of Historic Scotland and National Trust for Scotland sites. There are ideas to go to Galleries and Museums, visit Castles and Gardens, join in a Ghost Walk, enjoy a day at the Highland Games and many more activities that the whole family can do together, just like The Broons! The Broons family love to go on 'days oot!' - family outings, usually accompanied by a feast in an expedition-sized hamper, tartan travel rugs and the odd spare pair of socks! There are cameos from all of the Broons - their favorite trips and places to go. Edinburgh Castle, Kelvingrove Art Gallery & Museum, New Lanark World Heritage Site, and Culzean Castle are amongst the most visited places in Scotland. This book is packed with ideas to get folk out and about in Scotland - there's so much to see and enjoy. They take turns choosin' where. Sometimes they go in the car or on the bus, or take the bikes - there's so much to see that's not so far off from the But an' Ben. Sometimes it's a castle or the botanics, or a garden that's open somewhere - Granpaw has his favorites. Horace likes museums and galleries. They are all very keen on the Highland Games, so that's definitely one to look forward to, but Maw makes sure there is a bit of fun for everyone. The Broons all love a boat trip, or perhaps just a day at the beach is the very dab. And there are a few wee tips from Maw about what goes in the hamper! There's a folded wall map from Nicolson maps - a tourist map of Scotland. One thing's for sure - they are all happy days!

Editorial Reviews

Review
'It may seem odd that a series of books reflecting the Broons' distinctly dated way of life should become the Scottish publishing success story of the present decade. Yet - 18 months ago Maw Broon's Cookbook was number one bestseller for nine weeks, easily outselling the latest offerings from such celebrity foodies as Jamie Oliver and Nigella Lawson. The follow-up, Maw Broon's But an' Ben Cookbook, shot straight to the top of the Scottish charts last year. Now the Broons are taking on the world of travel literature with a new book seemingly tailor-made for our straightened economic times. The Broons Days Oot! explores the vast riches of a nation without blowing the housekeeping, bringing effortless wit and authority to every expedition, from a ramble up Ben Nevis to a dander down the Royal Mile. Never once does a Broon character step out of character. Their days out are punctuated with tartan travel rugs, picnic hampers, boiled sweets for the car trips and knotted handkerchiefs for days on the beach. And yet, while this may reek of nostalgia for a bygone age, the 52 expeditions featured in the book remain unerringly relevant to the modern tourist itinerary. In a rare concession to the 21st century, the Broons even provide website details for the attractions they visit. The Broons are hitting the road for the ultimate nostalgia trip... a journey that celebrates the delights of our great nation and the values that bind us together. Refreshing, funny, a great guide book5
I was looking for a new guide book to Scotland, and while this was not my instinctive choice, as I browsed the travel section I found the information in this book up to date and very entertaining. It is obviously written with a lot of insight into Scotland, and as well as being useful to plan a trip with, it highlights the best things to see if you (as we were) are short on time. I joined the National Trust for Scotland as a result of a visit to the Tenement House. I also bought this book as a gift to take home. At £7.99 it is a lot cheaper than most things about and seemed great value. The touring map of Scotland is very good, and the family I got it for are coming to Scotland for a week in August and thought it was good. I liked all the natural history and pictures of birds, and as a snapshot of Scotland the book is an ideal way to introduce people not only to the best things to see and do, but also is a quick intro into the culture. I would thoroughly recommend this book. Thank you!

THE BROONS' DAYS OOT ! The Very Dab !5
Astonishing value ! There's a terrific free map tucked in the back, and offers that add up to savings of many times the price of the book. I think this is the first time that The Broons' have spoken outside their cartoon speech bubbles and some of what they have to say is hilarious. The whole family contributes with their favourite outings from No 10 Glebe Street and their But An' Ben. Maw Broon's But An' Ben Cookbook: A Cookbook for Every Season, Using All the Goodness of the Land It is a guidebook that doesn't mince its words, and it really does give great ideas for family days out. Some are obvious, but many are refreshing reminders of what Scotland has to offer, with just enough background history to whet the appetite. Even those folks who aren't familiar with The Broons will enjoy this. All round entertainment, even if you never set foot across the door !
