One of the Best Audio Adaptations of a Classic
Although heavily abridged, this 2-cassette audiobook was how I first came across and learned the brilliant tale that is Jane Eyre. Considering that, I may be a little biased! Having said that, this is the only audio form of Jane Eyre that I have found as yet which features a full-cast and sound effects as well. I thought Claire Bloom was a good voice for Jane, and that Sir Anthony Quayle was perfect as Mr. Rochester.
The only downside is that it is too short, and therefore cuts out major parts of the story. It also begins, and ends, differently to the book, which is unusual. I felt that it would have been the best audio adaptation of Jane Eyre had it been longer. Then it would have truly stood out from the rest!
However, it is a very lively and enjoyable listen nevertheless, and is read with great feeling and emotion (I don't want to give anything away regarding the storyline, but I'll just say that it never fails to make me shed a tear at various points in the narrative!). I'm sure you can overlook the minor downsides to this audiobook and enjoy it anyway, especially if you are as great a fan of the book as I am!
